This depends on what engine management you use. Some have boost control capabilities built in (Haltech) and just need an inexpensive solenoid, while others (such as Uprev reflash) require adding a boost controller or modifying your wastegates.
I recommend not relying on just upgraded wastegate springs , electronic boost controllers can maintain a steady level of boost versus springs. Haltech with it's boost control option is super money because it can make adjustments based on so many factors/inputs. I haven't used it, but it seems reliable as a ems if you were going that route.
Like Sam said, I don't suggest relying on just the wastegate spring. It's a great idea to have a spring around where your running your boost levels, i.e 5lb spring with a controller allowing you to run 8 or 9lbs. But if you were running 17lbs daily it wouldn't make sense to have a 5lb spring. A 1 bar spring in that case would help you build your boost better.
Alot of different options for boost controllers though, HKS is a popular standalone controller, but then there are the pro-efi/ haltec boost controller setups also. If your using a haltec, pro-efi it would be easiest to just buy the solenoid and have one system control everything.

I ran my car on just spring, It never over boosted and never had any problem with it.
Actually, its much safer to run on spring pressure if your new to FI, because one day you will want more and then KABOOOM..

^^^forgot about the newbie part Mid!!! I know when i had my mk3 supra i trying to find ways to make more boost, discovered actuator shimming and threw a rod in through my block!!!! Since then, I've learned patience and managing expectations! That's y I say boost controller, cuz it can be another safety control.
