The intercooler looks too tall for the opening in the Z's bumper. How does it get even airflow?

Do you have to take out your front bumper support?

The intercooler was on the car earlier today, but it is off again. I am working on a better power steering fluid cooler. I am not a fan of what Greddy gave me to replace the stock one with, and im not a big fan of the stock one either even tho im sure it is good enough for a daily driver.

The stock one is nicer then the Greddy replacement... and after putting it behind the intercooler it will loose some of its functionality.

For this reason I have already found the first upgrade I want to make to this kit (and i dont even have the turbos yet)... and that upgrade is going to be this power steering cooler upgrade kit. For those that road race or auto-x, it may be of advantage.

If you see that aluminum pipe that goes back and fourth to make 4 rows, thats the part I am speaking of. The stock one has 2 rows but has fins. Im gonna redo all that and use nicer lines that make the intercooler fit better then retaining these metal lines that are there.

Since my turbos will not be here until Friday.. I have until then to finish my power steering cooler system.

Charles, glad that you are into the Z scene too! I have heard good things about you from apoji from IS300.net (you turbo'ed his SRT IS300)
Glad that there is an experienced tuner around here in the Midwest

benzz280: thanks for the props! apoji's IS300 was a challange... ultimately we ended up running the SRT fuel system which was questionably lean... I tried my hand at the E-Manage in that car but couldnt seem to get the boards jumper settings to something that would run the car well... so I removed it. The owner later got some jumper settings from a IS300 tuner that they had figured out, and he reinstalled it himself and I guess it worked out for him, which is cool.... The car is supposed to come back to me in January I beleive for a compression lowering headgasket and some custom fuel system and tuning. I am looking forward to the headaches that car will bring me again!!! haha very easy car to work on mechanically but man the ECU in that car really kicks you in the ***! IS300 = Engine: easy, Electronics: WTF?!?

Oops sorry guys missed the last 2 questions:

Feanor: The intercooler is definatly larger then the opening. However keep in mind, the intercooler has a very significant heat sink effect. Even if there was no airflow at all, it would still cool boosted air passing thru it until it was heat soaked. The air that does pass thru the opening in the bumper will directly cool where it hits, and of course from there you have the temperature transfer that will occur to eventually re-cool the entire intercooler.

This core is very large, and for the very low boost the kit comes set at, I dont think heat soaking the intercooler will be a problem at all.

Wicked4U2C: I regretfully must admit that yes, the bumper support beam is now removed. This core is far too large to fit in there and get along with the beam.

Now the thing is, its not uncommon for Greddy to release difference size IC core kits for the same car. I am hoping to see them release a half height kit for those that are not so hardcore... because there is plenty of room for an intercooler that would be a little smaller, as long as it had the 2 charge pipes collect before the inlet. If not, I am sure the day will come where a customer will want me or another shop to do a custom FMIC for the greddy twins that clears the bumper support, and hopefully then jigs can be made and a kit released to the public. Perhaps I should weld large beams to the intercooler to make it itself the support beam, haha.

I dont feel too bad tho... more often than not, anyone you see with an intercooler of this size has no bumper support beam. However the consumer must make the decision themselves under no other influence and readily accept the responibility of what they have installed on their car, and how it may effect the safety of the car. If it is a concern to you and you are a prospective customer of the Greddy TT system, I would highly recommend just having a trusted and experienced local shop build you a FMIC system that is slightly smaller. Unless you plan to really up the boost, this Type 23 Greddy core is just overkill (just the way i like it )

this weekend may or may not be possible, depending on some other projects... we just finished doing a super crazy buildup on a honda civic and after breaking it in we have been taking the motor apart inspecting for proper break in with all the bearings and measuring everything up making sure its all in order.

i am hoping to have the Z running on saturday, the car will probably only run with the greddy kit how it comes for about 3 weeks... by then we will be upgrading the fuel and ignition systems and starting to turn up the boost and put together forced induction tuning kits for people.

I have made the decision to throw out the window all the super crazy ideas I had for the tuning and I am going to just install a FCON V Pro... im working on my pro tuner status with HKS, and should be setup today... Thursday. I will immediatly order the system and get it here so I can have it running in the car ASAP. The first few weeks in the new shop its nothing but playing with the Z and my Civic and one unfinished customers MR2 that is making the journey with us.

Mr Rizk: You may have a lot of trouble getting that software. There are only 12 dealers in the USA that have it, and soon I will. If that software got out, whoever let it out is done as a Pro Dealer. I certainly wouldnt betray their trust and let it free. If you take your car to a pro dealer I am sure they could help you out.. but I dont know about anyone letting you have the software to take home.

I totally agree and would be happy to take it to a HKS Pro Dealer. The only issue is in Australia I do not beleive we have a Pro Delaer. There is a few guys that can tune the Japanese version of the software but they are not always in the country.

That is why I asked

Phunk,
I'm in Bourbonnais... about 90min. from Aurora. Where in Aurora are you located? Do you have a shop setup for engine upgrades? If so, I would like to see it and maybe have you do my install when the time comes.
Thanks
