Default Homebrew turbo kit.

I'm sure this has been discussed sometime before, but i didn't see a post for it. I was wondering if anyone has made there own turbo kit with any success. You can buy prefab turbo kits with only the piping for about 800 bucks. Most turbo kits i see for the z's are around 5k. Whats stopping a guy from buying that piping kit, a rebuilt turbo plus intercooler, bov ext. and saving a couple thousand bucks? Since most of the work is trying to get the piping to fit the engine bay is taken out by buying the kit. Is there something i missing here?

There is more to a turbo kit then the turbo and piping. You need an oiling solution, fuel solution, ems to name a few things. It has been discussed several times and there are guys that have made their own kit but they did so with a lot of time behind a welding torch to get all piping to line properly. Do you have a link to the prefab piping kits?

Bottom line: If you are looking to save money don't get turbo your Z.

That all makes sense. So either pay retail, or spend a ton of time with minimal savings. Sounds alot like everything else

Yup that's the realistic part about something like this. Unless you are fabbing it yourself, or know a shop that's willing to hook you up?

Which engine code is this on?

I made my own turbo kit, but I did all the fab work, used HX40 turbo , custom exhaust, utec, oil return pump. You better off buying a used turbo kit if you not doing all the fabrication yourself.

The clock is ticking on this one... I will come back in the morning

OP - You are being given solid advice, piping and a turbo do NOT a F/I system make.

It's pretty simple, if you can't afford a proven reliable FI kit, you're not gonna afford fixing what you are going to blow up with your custom turbo.

Your cheapest route would be making your own rear mount turbo setup. But for 800 you wont make it.

I spent approximately $1400.
-Ebay piping kit(s) (about $60 each, two of them)
-Real Tial WG $200 (you dont wanna cheap out on this)
-Shurflo scavange pump(s) $100
-a BOV $100 (ebay ones arent terrible, but I started off with a RFL, now with Tial 55mm)
-Turbo by far the cheapest reliable solution would be holset's. HX40Pro (i started with a hx35 $200 - $400
- welding/exhaust piping $150 - $300
- Intercooler $100-$200 (ebay)
- alot of random crap, (fittings, hoses, etc...)

Most importantly, knowledge and creativity.
Tuning would be a need as well, if your at zero with no tuning device, then your price quickly starts to climb.
