Planning for a custom twin turbo from a partial APS Kit
Ok, so i am currently in the military and deployed, gathering parts and information to start a twin turbo build when i get back home. I would like to start by saying that no this is not going to be a simple kit install and no it is not going to be made of all ebay junk either. I am an ASE certified mechanic (from before the military) and have welding experience and have put turbo's on N\A cars in the past so I am not new to it and understand what is involved. My original plan was for an N\A build but i came across a deal on a partial APS Extreme TT kit off of a wrecked G35 and picked it up for cheap. I did not get the whole kit and am now in the planning stages of making a custom set up off of what i was able to get. I have:
Manifolds (with external waste-gate connections)
Turbos (not 100% sure on the sizing of these have read several bits of information online about them)
One of the down pipes and waste-gate tubes\waste gate. and some of the IC piping.
My thoughts are the manifolds are the key point and worth the money to me alone as a good starting point. The turbo's have bent fins on both sides of both turbos. I am not really wanting to spend a grand each to rebuild them, and my power and performance goals are low as honestly i am only looking for 350-400 WHP. The original N\A plan revolved around the 4.08 FD that i currently have and would like to keep but feel it may be too short of a gear with more than 400ish to the tires, especially with the low end of the twins.
I am not looking for huge numbers and am not looking to have the best of the best of all parts out there, just get a bit more out of a car that will see mostly street and some weekend track use. I can and will fabricate most of the needed piping and exhaust, but my sticking point is the turbos. Since i was not planning a big money turbo build picking up a pair of new $1000+ turbos is really beyond what i would like to do. I was thinking persision turbo's as they are on the cheaper side and usually reliable, however i am having issues finding them in a t25 flange. Another thought was to look into s15 turbo's or even t25/t28 from the older SR20's and rebuild them on the cheap. I know they are not ball barring but they are OEM reliable. I'm sure some will flame for this idea but I am looking into making a good working set up with low goals out of a good deal I came across. I will address fuel and what not after i have the main hardware and fab work figured out.
Any thoughts or suggestions on the turbo situation? Input from anyone who has actually put together a custom setup using any of those turbo's greatly welcome.
Anyone know the specs on the Tial waste-gates used with the kit? I had this all shipped home and did not get the numbers off of it so i have a few months until I can look it up otherwise.
Also i have looked around online but can not find the answer dose APS sell just their piping kits separate from the whole TT kit? it looks like they do on their site but none of their distributes seem to think they do. It would make it easy to complete alot of the missing pipes that way.

You can not buy APS parts for the 350z anymore, and APS does not make any anymore. I wish I had those manifolds, I have the internal wg set. I did pretty much what you are doing. I am using a greddy intercooler and made most of the piping. If you are ever interested in selling the "kit" let me know.
Glad to see someone other than me piece parted one of these kits together. Funny you way you wish you had the external wastegates, i wish i had the internal it would make my turbo choices easier since i am not going for high power levels, i was contemplating a block off plate for that part of the manifold. What turbos did you wind up using or do you have the original APS ones still?
Your best bet would be to buy a TT universal kit and juse use that piping if it fits and use anything else off of it. If you're for sure going FI you need to get rid of the 4.08 gears. They are good for NA but don't allow you to boost to your best potential or to boost long enough.

That's what i have seemed to be reading about the 4.08's as well.
Right now figuring out my options on turbo's is the issue. I was not originally intending to spend 10k on a full turbo set up before i found this and thought it would be a great starting point. I do not want to spend 1k+ per turbo and rebuilding these two is not too far off of that. Any suggestions on turbos? I am seriously considering S15 T28's if i can find a good price on them Persision turbos look nice for the money and i have had great luck with them in the past but even though I keep reading they are available in a t25 housing, all i can find anyone selling is a t3 style.

I didn't get a chance to see what was originally here before it was deleted. I will assume it was either a negative comment about what i would idealy like to try and do or something along those lines. I am not set in stone on this yet as i have been collecting parts for a planned N\A build (Quaife LDS, bushing kits, 4.08 Final Drive etc) and still may go that route. Seeing as I have not pulled the trigger on exhaust yet and i found this deal i thought it may be worth looking into. I am sure this can be done on a decent budget with the right turbo's. I am almost sure i will not be going BB with what i would want to spend here so i am just asking for turbo ideas. At this point i am thinking i may just be best selling them probably for more than i bought the parts for and using it to continue my N\A set up. Just thought since the car is not my DD it may be a good route to go.
Ok so i got the parts all in the mail last week, Manifolds and waste gate are in great shape for unknown mileage off of a wrecked car. One of the turbos is in great shape, spins freely and no notable shaft play. The other has badly bent fins and is rubbing because of it but spins smoothly considering. Anyone know if you can just replace the fans with out the center cartridge? I don't really want to spend close to the price of the turbo new to rebuild it. At this point i am not sure if i should try the budget route with this or just sell it all off and go NA as planned. Any thoughts?

What I was talking about here was just using the piping from the universal kit and you can use your turbos, wastegates, BOV's, etc. from the wrecked car and just piece it together since you're ASE and seem to know a lot about cars and turbos.
If it were me, I would have both turbos rebuilt at the same time…there is a reason #1 failed and it'll only be a matter of time until #2 fails.
I had a good experience with G Pop Shop - I would check out their website...

I originally didn't want to rebuild due to the price but am thinking it's my best bet now. I looked at the G pop website and they didn't mention anything about the GT series turbo's only prices on the journal barring garret units. Have you used them for BB turbos before? I was just reading on an Audi forum that ATP has a CHRA replacement program where you return your core for a discount on the new ones. Anyone have any information on their program? are they new or rebuild CHRA's if anyone knows? The prices i was seeing for that were really low so I am kind of questioning it. I will rebuild both yes not just one. From what i have been reading there has been some debate about eh actual specs of the turbos that are included with the APS kit, but I have seen several times that they are GT2871's anyone know if this is correct? I was told that they used a custom turbo and want to make sure i am pricing out the right center section to rebuild them.

I believe Z1 Motorsport carries the direct replacement CHRA"s for the APS Extreme turbos.
