G35x 05 A/T Failure

G35x 05 A/T Failure
Well never heard of this problem but need a second opinion.
All of sudden my engine light and a/t light came on barely made it home and when i turned the car off and tried to turn it back on it wouldnt start. I towed it to my mechanic and he said its the automatic transmission module inside the tranny. the part itself is $1600 plus labor. said it would be cheaper to buy a new tranny
Has anyone heard of this or has had this problem?
its a G35x 05 sedan automatic 78,000Km. warranty ended last october.
