cold air intake vs. popcharger (again)

I said it once and i'll say it everytime these threads come up...if you are shooting for 300rwhp and need to scavenge every HP available, get a CAI such as Injen. If you aren't, JWT popcharger will suffice IMHO.

Does this all sound a little inconclusive. It is. Look at the designs of these options. There's not a significant difference. Consider the change in performance from one day to the next, different tanks of gas, etc. For the average novice, the variation in performance of an engine is larger than the difference it makes installing a longer tube, bigger filter, or cooler air, etc. Yea, you'll probably see performance gains, somewhere.
As a couple guys have eluded to, "this" works better than "that" when coupled to this plenum. If you change your cam, "that" may work better than "this" with the new plenum.
Colder air is always nice to have. Short term, your choice of intake duct hardware could be justified by looks as easily as anything else. Long term, should be balanced with how it works with your significant mods (plenum, cam, fuel control, etc).
I see all the commercial intake duct options as a compromise of marketing. For ex, they have metal ducting with no insulating improvements.

if you absolutely must squeeze every fractional bit of hp out of the Z then go with a good CAI. CAI looks better too. However, I dont like CAI for two reasons. 1. The CAI filter gets dirtier faster. 2. The filter is harder to get to and clean.
IMHO the whole getting hydrolock thing isn't really an issue unless where you live has typhoons all the time. Just don't drive into rivers and you should be find. On a side note my friend with the bypass valve for the AEM intake had the valve harden and crack after like 2 years

If you drive somewhere where the CAI filters are located on a Z, then you have a LOT more problems than just the intake sucking some water. I've seen many CAI's on cars, some very low and never seen one cause a problem except once. It was the exact 'stupid thing' you'd expect. It was post deluge and the guy drove his VW with a CAI filter sitting not 5" above the road through a 'puddle' big/deep enough to wash up over the hood, windshield and roof for a second. Motor was toast but covered in warranty somehow.

I'm adding to it too.
