Default spacers in exhaust... helpful? opinions needed

my friend with a G35 had this done, it was the first time i ever heard about this type of mod and it sounded so great and felt faster (placebo effect probably) that i had to have this done to my Z when i got it...

for those who dont know, its two spacers around the bolts that connect the muffler to the rest of the exhaust. The spacers are about 1/2cm so the pipes are separated by about a half CM... while i doubt it does much for performance, it did sound great... I have since removed the exhaust spacers due to the fact that I felt the "leak" was affecting my low end performance and causing turbulance...

but here is my question to you guys since in another thread, a fellow member recommends removing the entire muffler...

When i went to the shop who installed my equipment, i asked them to check for leaks and they found the spacers... they were immediately dumbfounded and said they had never seen that despite working on a healthy amount of Z33's and G35s... They also said it was pretty stupid and it was probably hurting me more than helping so whats the deal? has anyone ever done this or heard of it?... again, i chose to remove it becuase what they said made sense... they removed the spacers and sealed it for me free of charge, so it wasn't about them making money...

So all you did was make a 2cm exhaust leak then? Yea can't say I have every heard of anybody doing this, but I can say that it probably doesn't help performance at all.

hehe , I have 1/2" of spacers in my Z33 between the flanges and did 1/4" for my G35 buddy. It is definately a ghetto rig, but if you just want to make a little noise and dont want to spend the money on an exhaust system YET, then it suffices. But,, it does have a funny wind noise at low rpm and probably wont help you any for power!(most likely worsens power) oh well, till i have the funding, i dont mind using the spacers yeah, im pretty sure its illegal though since the exhaust is supposed to A:be muffled, and B: exit so it wont flow back up into the cabin and make u feel all funny . So, Id say if your not all about power, and you like the melody of your exhast, then use the spacers, they are a cheap(but not as good sounding) alternative to other exhaust systems you may purchase l8r on.
