Getting colder air without buying a new intake... Will this work?
I was talking to a friend about an intake for the Z and he advised not to get an intake but maybe just drill 3-5 holes on the bottom of the intake box from the inside, going out. This would hopefully increase the amount of cold air flowing into the intake, and shouldn't be affected by water/rain since the holes will be fairly small, and at the bottom of the box.
Anyone thing this is worth doing? Anyone even try this yet? Anyone see any hazards that could come out of this? Thanks for your idea's everyone.

You mean drill several small "weep" holes in the airbox? Based on teh shape of our intake system i would be weary of it. From teh looks of doing such a thing it would possibly be detrimental. You would be lowering the "vaccuum" effect inside the airbox by having those holes there. Instead of the air being pulled in as much as possible, air would actually be pushed back out those holes during heavy acceleration.
And if it DID pull air in, it would definitely not be cold air, since the box sits right near the engine.
We already have a "cold air" design the way the system is built. The only thing that is going to be beneficial without going aftermarket is to actually have a cutout made into your bumper in front of the inlet pipe to the airbox to give a semi-ram air induction. You could also get the metal upper piece from the Injen CAI kit, and have a local metals shop ceramic coat the interior walls to prevent heat soak in the upper pipe since that piece is in teh most direct relation to the engine.

the reason you are even considiring this is becuase your a 16 year old kid, and you have NO MONEY, GIMMIE A BREAK, you work SOOOOO hard for the Z yeah right then you consider somthing as retarded and ghettoe as drilling hole in the intake box
hey put some "duct" tape arround the exhuast pipes TRUST me it sounds alot better

This won't to a thing Ricky. Look at where the air inlet is on the airbox, it's right in front. Hell, considering most CAI only merit maybe 1-2hp, a few small holes merit no performance gains.

... I admit I'm not the smartest cookie when it comes to modifing cars, but we all gotta start somewhere. This wasn't my idea might I add, someone just suggested it, I wasn't sure if it'd do anything, so I asked for an opinon. I love how you throw age and money in my face, and 1 of which you have right, age. What were you like when you were 17? I'm sure you were just as cocky, and if you tell me you weren't, then you can ******** through your teeth
. Do me, and the other Z members on this site, if you will put down someone, 1) Learn the facts, and 2) Do it in a educated manor? Z-Ya.
you mean like how you acctualy brought up the fact that you 17, instead of 16, WHOOOOPDI dOOOO, and how the $30,000 car is parked in YOUR driveway, hahahahah. I dont mean to be disrespectful to you directly. i just find it absolutly halarious, and so typical when a spoiled little kid wants to justify a car that there parents bought for them, just admidt it who cares i dont, but just admidt it. If you didnt have your parents to pay for all of your other expenses you would not have the car plain and simple, but dont blantently sit there and make yourself beleive that youve paid any dues, or "work your *** of for it< OK cuz unless your a childsuperstar then you dont fool anyone, its not like anybody here beleives you guysm
secondly the typical kid like yourself, wants to do things to the 30,000 car that they should be doing a neon, thus reinforcing the fact that instead of laying down 225 for an injen or whatever, you are going to go into your parents garage and use your dads drill to drill holes in your intake.
I am sorry if i offended your intelligence, my response was not directed to you in direct form, but rather the whole
" IM 17 and a half and i work my *** off sooooo hard for this car" TYPE of mind, which really only shows how underdeveloped your maturity is
THanks take it sleasy

you tell him Ricky.....I too am a young Z owner. I got my Z a day after my 16th birthday. ChicagoEZ just because were not old enough in your opinion doesnt mean we dont posses any knowledge about cars. Im a really fast learner and know more about cars than some shops in my town. Are you going to put me down for that? Try to more open minded to things please...

When you judge a set of individuals by a simple trait "you are 17" and make assumptions (a) has no money and (b) mom and dad bought the car for you, this is another form of discrimination.
You are showing to have a closed mind by allowing those stereotypes to impair your judgement.
At least Ricky asked. The answer from me also is : no, do not drill the holes. If you were smart enough to ask, be smart enough to take the advice.
Also, ponder this :
(a) there are 17 year olds out there who have more money than you, ChicagoEZ. Deal with it. You don't have to be angry at them.
(b) even if dad and mom got him the car, so what? Is that a crime? I got my son a car. He deserved it. And I can. So there. (I didn't buy him a Z, I couldn't afford that! But he has a new Focus ZX3!)

I have a better idea, don't drill the holes, since you will loose the vacuum affect. Instead, buy a flexible dryer hose, and duct tape one end to the airbox opening, now route the hose to the lower airdam, bam! instant cai!
good in theory, but the various increases and decreases along with pipe imperfections will create more turmoil and drag in the air than the gains the cold air could possibly get.
however, it is possible if you removed the filter, run tubing down and put the filter down there, you would be fine, but then your basicly running the exact same setup, except their curves SHOULD be optimized for best performance, where your joints and curves are arbitrarily placed where they need to be to fit.

Be nice Guys! Different thought, better results... I have Injen CAI. I love it. It feels better at 3.5K and higher RPM, no pressure so not as punchy at low RPM. Here's the deal. Install everything that came with the CAI except the open filter and don;t remove the fact air box. Instead Cut the rubber hose from CAI at the point where it will meet the factory box. On the other end where the open filter would be, you simply buy a bell shaped vaccum end or PVC and attache it. With this mod you can truly get the Ram air effect with the back pressure you need. You may want to replace factory filter with k& N for more air pass through... Trust me. THis mod REALLY works... I did it. i'll post pics later when I finish my upgrades. I will have this dynoed and post it as well.

This is good, I think I'll try it! Pictures in next post. I especially like the arbitrary curves

Chicago- quit talking so much ****. i dont care what people think about me, im 18 (17 when i got my z) and the first stereotype is that my parents bought it for me. i am making $800+ a month as a waiter, have an internship every day for 3 hours, and on top of that school. What kind of car did you drive in high school ChicagoEZ? Did you pay for it? Did you even have a car?
Who gives a **** if is parents bought it? I feel a whole lot better about myself that I pay for it, so it means a lot more to me than it would if my parents bought it.
it' sad that you rag on a kid probably almost half your age. maybe you should grow up and learn how to answer a question with a short and precise answer and nt go off "just becase your 16....blah blah blah " *^$% that.
Even though im eighteen it all depends if you know how to race or not in the z; I could probably go up against you and tear you up (with the same car) and im only 18, as long as you kn ow how to race a car. Age doesnt matter. i got your back ricky and whoever.

Ahh, Chicago, I'm just screwin with ya...you gotta admit, you came across as a bit harsh to someone asking a perfectly legitamate question.
And Ricky, don't drill any frickin holes in the car!
-D'oh!
Damn Chicago,
I don't usually deal with people like this but I'm getting kinda tired of it. I'm ALSO another young Z driver - and this is my 2nd Z. I'm 21 and financed the car on my own credit with a significant down payment. My first Z I bought with my own money. My Audi I bought with my own money. My Z33 I bought with my own money.
Sorry you didn't get cooler toys when you were young. Move your response to "Off Topic" - go start a thread "I don't like rich kids because I wasn't one when I was young". I'm sorry dude, your attitude is retarded. So seriously, whats the age that you should be allowed to buy a 350Z? Is 21 okay? What if I won the lotto? What about some inheritance? What if my parents have some money that they don't need and they know this would be something their kid would really love? What if I'm 47 with 2 kids, a divorce, a mortgage, and I took out a $25,000 loan from Nissan Finance? I hope you paid cash outright for your car, because if you didn't that means YOU can't afford this car either. Probably 95% of forum members don't own their cars outright right now. And you know what, maturity is learned, not given by age.
If you wanted Ricky to be more "mature", you could offer a mature answer, such as "well, I doubt it'll do anything because..." Maturity has nothing to do with age.
And in answer to your question Ricky - I bet your buddy has a Honda. Thanks to Civic's incredibly tame intake system, I've actually seen people do this and actually increase HP. Thats why some Civic intakes can actually yield 5-15hp. Lots of people try DIY tricks to get more power, but I don't think this one will work for the 350. And from what I've heard, the AEM CAI or the Injen CAI actually do improve performance for a reasonable price - as well as facilitate future upgrades.

Buy some dry Ice and strap it on the Air Box. That should be good for 15 HP
In all seriousness, fork out the 200 bones for a CAI, or stay stock. I am sure you have worked hard for your car, regardless what anyone says. Don't half *** a mod to save 200 bucks. If you can afford a 30K car, you can afford the intake. If you can't afford the intake you shouldn't have gotten the car.

Damn! Thanks for all the backing up everyone. I really didn't expect it.. haha. Thanks!
And you're wrong dude, I did work my *** off for my car. I might not go out and work 50 hours weeks, but I do work my *** off in school, making the best grades, and to top it off, I work 40hour weekends (as needed) for my family business. Don't assume things.. you assumed I was 16, I had no money, then my parents bought it for me.... be a little smarter dude, have some respect. If you are in a bashing mood, go to a S2K site and reply in a Z vs S post
