Default resonated test pipes question

What's the difference in construction from a resonated to a resonated test pipe? I read a for sale thread on a resonated test pipe and some guy asked the selling to take a picture of the inside of the resonated test pipe so he can see the condition of the honey comb structure inside.

Well, if a resonated test pipe has those honey comb structure in them... isn't the resonated test pipe the same thing as a High Flow cat then? I just thought the buldge on the resonated test pipes where just different shapes to make a different noise, I didn't know they had some kind of honey comb filter in them, unless the other guy was mistaken.

I hope someone can clear this up. thanks.

No. High-flow catalytic converters are catalytic converters. Their purpose is to eliminate emissions. The primary technique is super-heating exhaust gases.

For noise attenuation there are two techniques. Resonator and muffler. For maximum effect, resonators precede mufflers. So a resonated test pipe is a resonator.

LOL, that is great work!

No to mention in the cats, there is a sand/brick like material behind those screens to filter out the emissions. TP's is just an open pipe.

So the buldge in the pipe of the resonated test pipes are just there to make different acoustic sounds, correct? It's not buldged out because there is anything in there, correct?

And also, is there anything I need to get for the testpipe so it doesn't turn on the cel light or other things?

Thanks.

There's fiberglass material in there to help tone down the exhaust note and raspiness.

A resonator is basically a very small muffler. The bulge includes various fibers, metal wires, and other items in there to deaden high pitch sound frequencies.

Okay! that is what I was getting at

If a resonated test pipes has various fibers, metal wires, etc. in the budlge... then what is the difference between a resonated test pipe and a High flow cat?

I know the difference between a NON-RESONATED test pipe and High Flow cats. What I am asking... Is it worth it to go from a High Flow cat setup(which I have now) to a RESONATED test pipe when your description of what it is sounds a lot like a high flow cat.

Sorry if i'm being confusing.

A high-flow cat cleans up your exhaust gases like a normal catalytic converter would do, but only enough to not trip the CEL. A resonated test pipe would flow better than a high-flow cat, but you need to make yourself an o2 sensor simulator so you won't throw a CEL

Refer to the bitmap I created for you. A high flow cat, or stock catalytic converter will have the honey comb inside the pipe. A test pipe doesn't have anything blocking its flow.

The resonator is like a muffler, it has all the fibers and metal wires around the pipe, it doesn't block flow.

For performance go test pipes. High flow catalytic converters will pass emissions sniffer tests. Some members alternate between test pipes - catalytic converters – emissions test – test pipes. Sounds like a headache too me.
