flex pipe rattle
i just installed my titek test pipes last nite and when i turned the car on i heard some rattiling sounds. i checked everything underneath and it looked fine until my friend pointed out it might be the flex pipes on the y pipe rattling. sure enough it was. i could see it rattling while my friend was revving the car. any suggestions on how to stop the rattling? i dont know how it got to start rattling in the first place.
does it only happen at decel or when the motor is revving down at around 2200 rpm? Reason I ask is b/c after i installed my STRUP TP's, I have had a rattling noise that sounds kind of like pennies in my exhaust...lol.
If you find a way to get rid of it PLEASE let me know...

yeh it happens around there. or even when im decellerating at high rpms i can here it rattle.
I installed a new exhaust with JIC y-pipe a few months back and I have a bit of rattling oing on too. Still have stock cats though so it might be a different problem. Make sure the connections between the y-pipe and test pipe flanges are properly tightened. I was getting some odd noises because the nuts holding the y-pipe to the stock cats were not properly torqued and the exhaust gases rattled the gaskets when it rushed past. I had the dealer tighten them up and the sound has all but gone away.
This Is What I Think It Is...i Have The Same Problem To...anyways When You But The Testpipes On You Have The Take The Lttle Support Brace Off That Bolts To The Cats And The Tranny..no That That Is Removed The Exhaust Flexs More...the Engine Shakes Alittle When You Decel...that Is My Thought On It....when I Install My Cats And Hook Everything Up Its Stops The Noise ,but When I Put My Tps On The Noise Comes Back,i Even Tried Putting Big Hose Clamps On The Flex Pipe And Still Rattling...but All In All I Think Its The Vibration Is Whats Causing It.....

Im gonna bump this thread back up top. I need a 100% fix for this situation too. I recently installed Titek test pipes and the rattling noise from decelerating at like 2k rpm is really getting on my nerves.
will ,,,as far as i know this matter we all face it .
it is the job the Felix pipe in the Y-pipe ,see i was told that when you install aftermarket TP or HFC it`s most likely bigger than the Y-Pipe (2.5 or more) so the Felix will expand to take the exhaust air from 2.5 to 2.25 thats why you it rattle . its happen`s and its normal.
i could be wrong but thats what i was told and i found it reasonable

I dont think its the Y pipe, as I have the borla TD, no y pipe. I get the same sound, I was actually coming to this section to start a thread about it.
In my investigation this is what I've found. I've pinpointed the sound to the right rear. So I got under the car and noticed a very small gap between the exh pipe before the muffler and part of the rear right suspension. There was also a little "fresh metal" exposed at the site, leading me to believe this is the spot where the vibration occurs.
I'm not sure how to fix it though. The simplest way I can think of is put a piece of rubber between the two, something that wont melt against the heat of the exhaust. It wont really get rid of the vibration, just the noise.

I've been saying this for years, but no one listens. This "rattling" is not a loose component. It's the nature of the VQ when you open up the exhaust and remove the cats. I've heard the exact same noise everyone on this this site and Gdriver describes and shows in videos when I had my VQ30 Maxima with an aftermarket y-pipe (removes the two precats) and catback. That metallic ping/rattle is the firing order of the VQ. It's a nasty sound and the ONLY way to fix it is to either load up the exhaust with resonators/mufflers or reinstall the cats. Adding a different y-pipe, catback, etc will only burn a hole in your pocket and you'll still have the noise.
^^
Rattling is not normal..
My cousin has Megan V2 test pipes on his G coupe and his does not make any kind of rattling noise. I also have HFCs on my car and I don't have any kind of rattling noise either..
The rattling you guys are referring to is definitely some kind of metal-to-metal contact. In the very first post of this thread the OP says that he located the rattle coming from the flex sections in his y-pipe..

i just installed my titek test pipes and havent experienced any rattling from the y-pipe area. the only rattling i have is from the rear (low rpms) which seems to happen wtih Injen True Dual exhausts.
BTW, THOSE WHO INSTALLED TITEK TPS, ARE YOU GETTING THE CEL LIGHT EVEN AFTER PUTTING ON THE CEL FIXES? mine popped on about 300miles in

Thank you for agreeing. The rattle is most definitely the nature of the beast and a lot of people on this site and Gdriver waste a lot of money trying to pin point the nature of the metallic ringing that occurs under load between 2000rpms and 5000rpms. It's the firing order of the VQ and the lack of sound deapening material in the exhaust (ie TP, HFCs, much thinner walled piping than OEM). On some setups, the sound isn't as pronounced. If you want to get rid of the noise, you're going to need quiet down the exhaust. It's as simple as that.
