Default Can Headers Cause CEL ???

I am still trying to find the root of my CELs codes P1273 and P1283.

Could they be related to Strup headers being installed? I forgot if I had them before I installed the headers, but I am about ready to put the factory manifolds back on the car.

Someone told me that these CELs are related to the upstream O2 sensor which actually affects drivability (I get 15 mpg lately). It is located where the header meets the engine, so this is why I think it might be causing trouble.

I just want to make sure before I swap the manifold back.

Thanks.

I'm curious too...I had the same code for some time after my header install, but not immediately thereafter. I think I had the same code...stated I'm running too lean 116 and 115%. All the while I noticed no obvious gains with the headers. Do you notice any difference with performance with the headers? Can our car be in this "limp mode" that I've read about? How would we correct this?

I am going to install the anti-foulers soon and see it that does the trick. I cannot tell if it is the front O2 sensors near the header or the ones in the cats. I have high-flow cats as well.

We shall see.

This is the pre-catalytic converter sensor. Most likely this is not the cause of your problem.

I believe that the problem is here: the post-catalytic converter sensor.

Interesting that you say that! I noticed a small crack in the cat down pipe, at the elbow, just before the o2 sensor (I,too have Crawford cats). Had it welded, 2 weeks later, my CEL light turned off. I think it may have been that sensor, but I didn't think that it would just reset itself.

sure, if your headers lean you out, you might need tuning to get rid of that cel

I didn't check exactly, but if I remember correctly, those codes are air/fuel too rich/lean

put your car up on a dyno or get some kind of air/fuel measurement... and in the future, get those codes checked so you're not just wondering
