I have the exact noise w/ my kinetix testpipes. My shop said it is probably a smallllll leak and they will look at in on tuesday. It sounds like a BB kinda bouncing around in the pipes, or almost as if a bolt was loose and a thin metal wire was vibrating on the side of the pipe really fast greating a sort of buzzing sound. Odd description lol i know, but ill let everyone know once my shop tells me exactly on tuesday. Oh and yeah its pretty loud lol.

Well, I got home on Friday and took the test pipes off that I had put on the day before and put on the Megan Racing ones that I had sitting in the garage for so long. I still get the sound but not nearly as much as before. I checked to see if there were any leaks with a piece of paper and there were none (that I could tell). All bolts were tightened and re-tightened. I have pinpointed the spot of the "sound". It is coming from the Y-pipe. Approximately where the two mesh bulbs are (I have no freakin idea exactly what they are). Would an aftermarket Y-pipe fix the problem or would it make it worse? I am working my way to a full exhaust system replacement but I am working in stages. I started with the headers (since I knew they were going to be a total ***** to put in) and I am now working my way back.

A friend of mine said that he believes that it is exhaust air backflushing into the resonators. Any opinions on that?

those "mesh bulbs" on the Y-pipe are flex pipes. They leak sometimes ( actually quite often ) Getting a new Y-pipe should fix it if thats actually where the leak or w/e it is is coming from.

Yes, for now. I am exchanging everything out in stages. I started with the headers, just got done with the test pipes, moving my way back. So you think it may be the Y-pipe making the noise?

Definitely I had the same thing happen to mine right around 2 grand, no other time. After getting it on the rack at work and looking at it with someone reving the car while on the lift. Some of the "mesh" on the Y pipe looked loose and that is where the hissing was coming from.

I have the same Res TP. These aren't the best quality TP on the market, they are known for the resonator welds breaking on the inside. This could be your problem, but i have a hiss when I'm decelerating with my foot off the gas or brake (coasting). I think it is just the test pipes. Check for leaks and also, just learn to live with the noise until you can buy some high dollar res TP. Good luck. If you find out whats making the noise i would love to know. Thanks.

I think your Tanabe is broke. Just ask Motormouth. He had the same problem.

This is my 2nd set of test pipes in three days. Funny that they are both broke. BTW, it is not a Tanabe test pipe.

Funny cause that is pretty much the exact same noise i have got at exactly the same revs, sounds even worse when you IN GEAR on the slow down, its louder and prolonged, but as far as i know ive only got a Fujitsuo Legalis-R stainless, all other exhaust parts are stock. I as as far as i know as it is an import and god knows what the guy did before me but i dont think hes done anything else. . . . how the hell could i tell anyway?

Noise was DEFO coming from the Y-Pipe, seeminlying under the junction of the 2-1 pipe join. Theres a weird little cover over the stock junction, whats that all about? Maybe they are problem with something under there.

EDIT: Im starting to think i may, based on 1)my fuji exhaust sounds alot more aggressive than other clips ive heard 2) I do get a small amount of weird smell when i come to a stop light, and ive heard ppl mention this about 'smell' with test pipes. . . .hummmm intersting. . .

cheers

Jamie

I just installed Crawford cats and JIC ypipe on my Z. When i rev it and let off there'ss a hissing sound that starts and it ends when it drops to about 1.5k rpm. Sound appears to becoming from the Y-pipe. Both items were bought new from Perf Nissan. Could it be the y-pipe is leaking?

EDIT: Are the OEM gaskets the best to use? I'm currently using the gaskets that came w/ the y-pipe.

I also am currently using the gaskets that came with the test pipes. I dont know if they make a difference or not. I know I sound like a total idiot on this but I guess that's because when it comes to modding I am. I have never done anything like this before and I'll take all the help I can get. Do any of you all think that if I go ahead and add an exhaust ( Injen SES ) that it will help or resolve the problem? Again, I really want to thank all of you that take the time to help.

I had no idea that the gaskets provided sucked that much. I didn't have this issue w/ the NISMO y-pipe and the gaskets provided with that. I'm considering going to Perf. Nissan tomorrow to get myself some OEM gaskets for my Y-pipe. Hopefully, it'll help resolve the issue. I really hope it isn't a problem with the y-pipe's flex joints since i just bought it 1 week ago. I'll let you know if it resolves the issue.

I just watched your youtube videos and the sound it makes is REALLY loud. Mine isn't even close in volume. I have to have my door open (just having the window down isnt enough) in order to hear the noise. It also makes the hissing noise when I'm turning the motor off.
