Default strup header problem

i installed strup headers on my 06 350z auto non-revup motor back in
December and right after i had problems with my steering shaft rubbing
one of the tubes on hard cornering, had to shave part of the shaft off
to give it clearance otherwise it would rub and allow the shaft not to spin
and steering would go out-really sucked.

after shaving off a little material off of the shaft i went out to my test
roads where i had the problem before and it was fine, i then did an auto-x
the next month and had no problems but there were no real tight corners
that event, but... last weekend i had another auto-x and the problem came
back. i asked some peope and they said not to shave any more material
off because it could weaken the shaft-i could put a dent in the header
pipe for a little more clearance or one guy said to either get solid motor
mounts or add polyurethane to my existing mounts to allow less movements
on turns.

look forward to some knowledgable responses

you may have a defective header. I do know that strup has problems with the steering shaft but i dont advise you to grind that down. I would replace the header before you go makeshifting something to "hold you over" Strup will probably replace for free and would be worth a shot. If you break your steering than your going to have to do it anyways.

I installed my strup headers last yr and autoX'd at more than 20 events in '07...no issues whatsoever w/ rubbing/clearance. +1 to contacting strup - who did the install?

i work for a dodge dealer-one of my service techs and myself did the
install one day after work-not sure how the install could be an issue
headers only fit on one way, steering shaft does not move side to side
only slides up and down inside the threaded hole in the rack and pinion
and the coupler in the middle is almost making contact no matter how
the shaft is put in, deep or shallow.

did you guys install them yourselves or have them done? we read the
steps mentioned in the instructions, only thing we did different was
we did not remove the entire exhaust, just removed cats-otherwise
followed instructions step by step-and not really sure how the headers
could be the problem unless my tube was contructed a lot thicker than
the rest of the batch or the tube routing was more curved outward away
from the cylinder head than normal making the gap closer to the shaft
before we modded the shaft it was about 1/8inch away at rest now is
maybe a 3/16 to 1/4inch but depending on how hard i am cornering
is when it rubs

I had this problem on my 06 rev-up with strup headers. I really didnt feel like driving 2 hours to the shop that did the install to have them spend 3 hours getting the header off and replacing it with another one that would yield the same problem. SO... I had a shop put a small bend in the piping. I highly doubt there are any serious negative effects of this bend or really any power loss for that matter as well.

Solved my problem and Im happy

i was going to try that next, i figured it was the next easiest thing to try
because taking header on and off again would blow. my next auto-x is
in about 2 1/2 weeks and looks like it will be a tight and technical course
because it is a smaller parking lot than the ones i usually go to, hence
smaller course means more prone to my problem occurring.

so i am going to bring my car into my shop next week to do some
maintenance and i will try that then and report back on the outcome
