Default Cat pipes or high-flow cats...

I have seen people that have cat pipes (like 350zDanny). My question is wouldn't a high-flow cat be better? I know the cat pipes replace the cat all-together, but they make it smell bad. They may have power, but high-flow cats could also. I think I am going to go with high-flow cats instead of pipes because of the smell (even though I don't have to pass emissions). Also high-flow cats would have a significant weight loss too. Anyone know who makes high-flow cats?

Random Technology, CarSound, and Magnaflow all have high flow cats, but none for the 350z yet.

The smell my car is putting off is starting to subside a bit. It was really putrid earlier this afternoon.

The only real benefit of a test pipe over a high flow cat is a very small (and i mean very small) amount of power potential and cost. Cats generally cost 20 or 30% more than stainless test pipes.

You're right though. If there was a high flow cat available I probably would have opted for that. If you don't have to break the law, why bother? Good luck with your decision.

So what is the smell come from? I know cats can smell sometimes, but early cars like my old 240z don't have any putrid smells without cats, and they burn the same gas.

It comes from the engine of course, but I couldn't tell you exactly what it comes from. The smell is carbon monoxide and can kill you if you breathe it in for 6 or 7 breaths. Why it puts off this smell, I don't know, but maybe someone else does. Oh yeah, just realized that Nismo just came out with some high-flow cats, but I will wait and see if others come out with some.

Oh man here we go again. Carbon monoxide is odorless. You are not smelling carbon monoxide in the exhaust. There is a lot more in the exhaust that cause the odors like sulfur, unburned fuel, etc. And it will kill you if you suck on the tailpipes.

How am I supposed to know that carbon monoxide doesn't smell. You don't have to suck on the tailpipes to get the toxins, just breath it in for a few breaths. I didn't know carbon monoxide didn't smell, as I said, maybe someone else can go into detail. Why are you such a jerk to me on just about every thread I am on, I truly dislike you. Good job, you rag on a 14 year old who doesn't know a lot about cars, yeah, that makes you smart.

The smell is NOx (various nitrous oxides). They are the reason the cats are there. They are very poisonous and are a major contributer to smog and acid rain. If you remove your cats, don't plan on bitchin' about smog or forest degredation. And it is not the cats that smell. It is the gases that come out of the engine. The cats treat this gas. When cats go bad, people say "oh that guys cats must be bad". They are right, but it is not the cats that cause the smell. Bad cats stop correcting the bad smell.

Then don't act like you know a lot of stuff about cars. Stop posting false facts without saying something to clarify the fact that you actually DON'T know what you are talking about. I had no idea you are a 14 yr old kid and that is the problem with the Internet. People sometimes take it on good faith that those who provide facts know what they are talking about and believe them. Quit providing bad info, I don't care how old you are. By the way, the purpose of any of my posts is not to get the acceptance of other members. It is simply to provide the truth, my opinion, but never false information. By the way, how do you know I am not 13? Age is relative and therefore irrelevant. Perception is everything.

Pepti, you are right but more specifically, the cats are not there to make cars smell better. They are there to heat up to extreme temperatures to nullify the gasses that harm the environment and in turn, eliminate the smells associated with these oxides of nitrogen.

I do know a lot about cars. But I don't know details, I know pretty basic stuff. If someone takes everything everyone says on the internet for the truth, then there would be a lot of messed up cars. Take everyone's words as their opinion and not as a fact. What bad info did I provide? He clarified he knew that carbon monoxide didn't smell. 2003z said it in a simple non-offensive way, mr.potatohead you are a rude person (at least to me). I didn't know how old you are, but to be so confident and cocky, I know your not 13. BTW, thanks for high-jacking the thread. If you don't like what I say, keep moving, there are other threads that you can terrorize other people because they are afraid to ask something stupid because they risk being ridiculed by people like you. That drives members away and makes them not want to participate. Grow up and stop insulting me when I have directed nothing to you or insulted you. I will leave you alone and I hope you do the same from now on. Forget a comeback, if you have something else to say or comment/ridicule, pm me so this thread doesn't become a mess driving people away from reading it.

I've never bitched a day in my life about either of these. You can ***** about it all you want. Once the Z is tuned to run a little leaner than it does now, the smell will significantly subside. Most of the putrid smell is from unburnt fuel as the Z does run pretty rich from the factory. If you smelled it you would know instantly.

And putting on a test pipe instead of cats won't kill you. I'm not sure if that's one anyone meant. There's enough CO in regular exhaust gases to kill you. The deletion of the cats won't change that.

We'll have to see how much HP the pipes get, the numbers from the cats Random Tech is working on are just 3HP increase and a price of 324 per cat.

I never said anything insulting to you. I corrected a false statement you made. Look at the times that the other guy and I posted about the smell. Virtually identical. I am sorry you are so sensitive. I doubt anyone wants to watch this little debate over your feelings. It's only the Internet just relax. Pride doesn't exist, no one knows who you are. Let's let this die right here unless you are the last word type then I will let you have that...

Just a little advice that you will probably find offending anyways, but I had to learn also when I was young. Learn the little details first. Until then, you really don't know much about cars. Basics are the most important thing in any aspect of life be it basketball, autos, or whatever. Learn to crawl before you walk. Reading posts is how you use the internet to do that. Not posting wrong info for those who are reading to learn to use in a wrong way. Good luck!

And to answer the topic so I won't be accused of hijack, you need to ask yourself,

does your urge to acheive the best bang for the buck overcome your potential guilt for contribution to the desctruction of the world? For me, it does. I ordered the pipes a while back but they are not here yet. Maybe tomorrow.

You didn't see the "Oh man, here we go again." that you typed? That is insulting. It is no big deal now, but I guess every time from now on you or anyone says anything offensive I need to walk away and try to forget it so I don't backlash. I would know more about cars if I was in the right enviroment to be able to learn about them off the internet. I try to help as many people as I can, sometimes it's wrong, other times I don't know anything about what I am talking about, others I ask for someone else's advice, or am 100% correct. I'll try to reserve myself from now on.

I thought you were going a completely (treehugging) different direction with that when I started to read it. LOL.
