Some test pipe questions. Worried about low end torque lost.

Okay so lately I've been thinking about grabbing some test pipes for my G35. Only problem is I hear people loose a lot of low-end torque but gain after 4000rpms. The question is exactly how much are we talking here?
I talked to a fellow G35 owner yesterday and he had a Rev-Up with MD 5/16th spacer, MREV2, Strup TPs and HKS exhaust. After listening to his exhaust I know I had to get one. (Getting a HKS!) But he had told me to get the sound he was producing, I would have to get some sort of test pipes because when he didn't have the test pipes it didn't sound as good as it does with the pipes installed.
So I asked him about the gains/losses. He said he can definitely feel the gain after 4000rpms and definitely feel the losses of torque under 4000rpms.
This got me wondering. I am a torque freak, and as it is already I think the G35s/350zs already need about 50+lbtq more for each engine, so loosing more torque would not make me very happy.
Although, here comes the situation cutter -- UpRev tune. Would that help at all with bringing back the low torque before 4000rpms back to where it belongs?
Or basically what are your guys opinions -- should I get test pipes or not? I know alot of people think it's worth it, and don't talk about rasp please. The G35 owner who showed me his exhaust setup had no rasp and it sounded sexy! So I'm not worried about that much if at all.
Thanks again.

i enjoyed the gains i got from my test pipes but hated the smell and drone after a while and now have HFC. I would think the torque losses like the hp gains are going to be minimal, after all this guy had done, if he was seeing a 15whp gain i'd be impressed, and likely some torque gain, but maybe a slight bit higher rpm. If its all about sound, and you like it, go for it.

+1, I love the sound of mine. I have test pipes, AAM y-pipe, pop charger and spacer and stock exhaust. From 3-4k is alittle raspy, but after that the cars sounds bad ***. I had Berk HFC and I like my test pipes better. Got my test pipes for tuning. Just my 2 cents

If you open things up too much, you will loose low end. It's all about the flow which means that the pipes have to be properly matched to your applications. Resonated pipes will probably not be ideal although many say they make better sound. I'd try to find something that is around 2.25" in diameter for ideal flow although most TPs I've seen are 2.5". If you don't make the pipes too big, you should keep the low end and gain some top end. If you go main brand true dual all the way, you may not be able avoid that though. Most of name brand exhausts I found are too big for the NA Z. Opening things up will yield higher peak HP numbers which probably why it's so popular to go with slightly too big to boast better top numbers while loosing some area under the curve.
I just finished (about an hour ago!!!) installing my test pipes and it sounds great! I was very hesitant at first because, like you and many others, I didn't want to have my car sound like crap. At idle you can't even tell a difference. The car sounds great throughout the RPM band. Very happy I did this. The smell isn't too pleasant but I hear that there is some oily residue on the TP's from the manufacturing process and once that burns off (~100 mile or so) then the smell isn't as bad. I think I'll order the cat section from Motordyne for the XYZ pipe, that should clean up the smell some. Now I just need to send a new log file to Uprev for them to retune me!
BTW, I purchased the Megan Racing V2 pipes w/ extended O2 bung and flex sections. Very nice pipes, especially for the price.

u must have sh1tty exhaust bc every exhaust i have had(8) 5of them had test pipes and can we say PURE SEX!!!!

Personally, I love the sound of mine. They are not raspy and they have not cracked.
However, I'm running mine with stock exhaust. I will probably change to HFC if I go with an aggressive exhaust system.I didn't notice much loss at all on bottom end but I do notice when I pass at highway speeds.

I just installed a set of resonated test pipes on my car the other night.
After you run it for a while, and they get broken in, the sound is amazing. Very exotic.
This is with stock exhaust too.
I can tell a difference in power, both good, and bad.
The good - it pulls harder when taking it up to redline.
The bad - I did lose some low end. Between 2k and 3k, it no longer has the same amount of torque as it used to.
Overall, I'm satisfied with them. The torque loss is there, but it's not enough to affect the driveability.
Right now, the test pipes, and a popcharger, are my only mods. I think that a plenum spacer might restore some of the lost low end.
