Default Rasp and Question

Okay I don't know if this has already been answered but the rasp produced by installing test pipes is due to the stock y pipe's heat shield rattling due to the excessive vibration any test pipe design would cause. I got a set of AAM test pipes on my HR Z last weekend and have had the rattle for a week now, I went back to the shop today so they could lift it and rev it to find what was rattling and it was the heatshield (I was with the tech trying to find the rattle).

So my question is this, if I remove the heatshield off of the y pipe , would the heat damage the car or would it be okay to remove ?

Rasp is created by exhaust flow, you are experiencing rubbing. Taking the heat shields off your OEM y-pipe will not help anything.

that is not rasp, that is a vibration in the exhaust sytem causing the heat shield to make noise. like mentioned earlier, rasp is caused byt the sound of the exhaust moving through the pipes.

So my question is this, if I remove the heatshield off of the y pipe , would the heat damage the car or would it be okay to remove ?
no, because a lot of the aftermarket exhausts do not have a heat sheild anyway. so i say it will be ok to remove

rasp is a shity sound coming from the exhaust end.

Rattling means your head shields or something on your exhaust is loose.

we can tell you whats wrong without seeing the car in person

OKay Great, I'm taking off that damn heatshield. If the rattling isnt rasp then whatever as long as I dont have that annoyingly loud rattling zing everytime the motor goes from 2 - 3k rpms. It really makes it sound like ****.

I do not like the idea of removing any heat shields. There are where they are for a reason.

I have a hard time digesting the fact that the heat shields are giving you problems. Take off your y pipe and cats and see if they are loose. If they aren't then that is not your problem.

Yes, I do have an aftermarket y pipe and test pipes. There is no heat "coming through the floor". You could always apply more thermal tape to the underside of the car in that area. Again, check your heat shields to see if they aren't loose. If they are then just tighten them up.

Actually If you read down from the point I first asked if heat would come through the floor of the car it took 5 dumbass replies till twin001 finally answered it. Yours was one of the 5 ...

Anyways thanks Twin for telling me what I needed to know.

Just wear 2 pairs of socks and your feet wont get burned on the carpet.

For real though theres no difference from the stock one. The only heat u feel is from the tranny.

Why do you have to respond like that? I'm trying to save you some time. If you have looked at the heat shields then you would see what I'm talking about. I'm not saying that it isn't the heat shields, just very highly unlikely. And yes, there is thermal material attached to the underside of the car along the path of the cats and y-pipe....or at least on my G35 there is. That along with the body, padding, and carpet will make it difficult for heat to come through the floor of your car. Go ahead, take the shields off. You're more than likely going to have to grind off half the bolts that hold it on.
