Default Who here has data logged their MAF air temperature?

Have you data logged your MAF temperature sensor data for a long drive, road course or drag race?

If yes, please describe your hardware, the test conditions and test results.

I have been doing exactly this with the stock intake but I would like to see more data points. It doesn't matter what you have. Any data would be good to see.

Much appreciated. Thank you!
Tony

What choices in products can i get to do this. I would like to do stuff like that, not to mention have something for code scanning.

The Cipher data logger
or
Nology lap top dyno

I use both of these but there are countless other data loggers.

Cipher is a great tool created by my350z forum sponsors.

I'm not saying the other tool isn't good. I just haven't heard of it before or used it.

Cipher is better for logging data, is much more user friendly and has features Nology doesn't, but the Nology laptop also has some very cool features the Cipher doesn't have.

...So I have both.

If anybody here has a good interest in what the data is or how their car works, I recommend both. Both are extremely helpfull.

There is a lot more to this product than just data logging.

If possible post the results from start up to a drive around town. Or even a drive from work to lunch and back again.

Be sure to get the heat soak from a hot restart before starting the engine and even for a minute or two after shutting off the engine.

Basically get the whole range of thermal data showing all the thermal transients and cool down time for WOT and normal driving.

Also set your dashboard display to show what the ambient temperatures are and take note of the outside air temperature when logging the MAF temperatures.

This will tell you how much of a MAF temperature rise there is relative to actual air temperature.

Below is what I measured in the white Z after stopping for a quick lunch at a restaurant and driving back to the office.

Note: The large plastic diffuser beneath the engine was not in place during this test.

The test results in the black Z (with the plastic cover in place) shows a much higher temperature MAF temperature rise in steady state driving.

Looks like it takes less than a minute to cool down from a heat soaked non running stop. I would love to see a graph or about 5 minutes at idle with and without a popcharger, and the same graph that you just posted with a pop charger installed.

I was actually out datalogging the other night (out of boredom & curiosity). I let my car idle in a parking lot for about 2 minutes after a long 45 minute drive at night time. Started out at 84 degrees IAT then when I shut it off after 2 minutes, it was all the way at 122 degrees. The way it was going it seemed like it wasn't going to stop. I turned off the car for a little while, made a phone call, then once I started it up about 5 minutes later it was even higher than the 122 degrees! IIRC it was 130+ But of course I wasn't recording.

Once I started moving it cooled down rather quickly. Here are some screen shots, I hope this helps. Note that I have two mods that would affect underhood temperatures: strup headers and Stillen intake.

Tony, great thread by the way. I read about your post mentioning the intake you plan on releasing. It got me thinking, one of these days I'm going to do back to back runs comparing the stock '05 intake w/ K&N filter to the Stillen intake, measuring MAF reading and IAT.

Right on.

Data log all that you can and post it. Data is a good thing to have when looking for HP.

I need to get one of these to play with, i heard one of the handheld scanners can also tell you temp. I would love to play with my car and a few other local cars. I still wonder how much my Kinetic plenum helps with heat soak, how much a Varis duct help with cooler intake charge, and what a few other products actually do/help if any.
I am convinced the popcharger is a benifit, stop and go traffic , who the f cares, but the gains at speed where i would want them on a roadcourse is worth it.

I've been doing alot of temp logging lately for another project I am working on for the car. I did some logging on my car tonight on my way home. I'll post the graph tomorrow since I only saved it as an Excel file and I'm not sure how to post that type of link without hosting it on my ftp. Anyway, sat in the parking lot for about 4-5 minutes as I was fiddling with the utec (Cipher was not plugged in at that time). Shut the car off for a couple minutes, restarted it, let it sit about a minute and then pulled off. I did 2 logs, one I did a quick run through 1-3rd, the other just more of a cruise. This was between a shopping center and my development. Anyway, ambient temps were 79 according to the gauge in the car, and looking online, humidity is in high 70% range at the moment. My temps while sitting in the lot for the minute or so before I took off were steady at 122 F. While moving they dropped immediately to 87-89 D and stayed there as I cruised. On the second log, which was as I got closer to home, I saw temps as low as 80.6 F, which is basically ambient. This was without the bottom cover on. However, I logged the same thing under nearly identical circustances with my underpanel on and there was almost no deviation (my underpanel is vented, which I am sure helps). I've never logged with a stock underpanel as I donated that to cheston many moons ago

I have some more logging to do tomorrow so I'll try to post the charts

Was that a stock intake or CAI of some kind?

I haven't logged in awhile, but here's a Cipher log I did last Spring:

Ambient temps were in the mid 50's F. Stock intake with Amsoil Dropin.

I wasn't heat soaked in this log though, so take it for what it's worth.
