I was wondering if i can buy 2 cheap mufflers and put straight pipes to my test pipes? i wanted to know if that is the same as getting an EXPENSIVE CAT BACK?

. I say buy whatever canisters are avail in ur price range and def get a resonator like vibrant and then run straight pipes. If that makes sense its what i was gonna do and i think im going to again now that im typing this

Answer to your question is yes, you can, but on a Z is it really cheaper? I do not recommend buying "cheap" mufflers however. Especially if your idea of "cheap" is some sort of "xxxstyle" off of ebay. The welds and quality of thier glasspacking is skeptical. Quality universal mufflers that are priced relatively low (magnaflow, dynomax, borla..) can be had for a decent price if you shop around. Next step is ordering piping. Summitracing.com has pretty good prices, just determine your desired size. Order a couple of donut pipes as well. Press bent exhaust create more than desired backpressure as it will act as a bottleneck. The idea behind ordering the donuts is that it allows you to measure yor angles, and then cut your bend out of the donuts and have them welded in place. You're also going to need to order flanges to match your test pipes, flanges to create a rear section, gaskets, and bolts. Last thing to consider is how loud do you want it? Not ordering resonators can save you some coin, but you run the risk of becomming obnoxiously loud.
This will only save you money if you are doing the cutting and welding yourself. If you have to bring it to a shop and have them measure, cut, weld, etc..the money you spend on labor in addition to what you have spent on parts is going to bring you up in the price range of a quality name brand exhaust. Especially if you plan on going dual (more piping, extra muffler, more flanges, gaskets, bolts, labor, etc..). I built a 3" turboback on my dsm for about $430 doing my own work. However something tells me it wouldnt be as cheap or worthwhile on my Z.

Thx man i appreciate it for explaining in detail. Not like some kids that come on here and talk ****. I was thinking about buying 2 good mufflers... not like cheap cheap **** then go to a exhaust shop and ask them how much would it cost for the piping and ****.
A cat back is simply that. You wouldn't have to get test pipes to have a cat back. As for the mufflers, no. Our exhausts are single. The muffler simply has two outlets. You get a good single universal muffler and have a short pipe welded up to bolt up to the midpipe just like the stock muffler. In aftermarket terms it's called an axle back. I was going to do that, but came across a really good deal for my Injen Super SES. I'd recommend that using a Magnaflow (some of the best sounding exhaust made, imo).
You're welcome man, that's the point of these forums right? to help one another out. I miss DSMTuners.com sometimes lol. But Jiggy and Zilverstone are right. You could create a nice sounding Z for real cheap If you just want an axle back, the question is if you're in it for power or for sound (or both like me..). Not to sound cocky, but I believe my way as listed above is the "right way" to go about building a custom exhaust. If you buy the mufflers and head to mienike, you're going to leave with press bends. if you follow my route on a Z, the power gains are going to be questionable (no R & D, no dyno proven results), and come without a manufacturer warranty. With good exhausts priced in the range of the materials I described..I'd personally buy a name brand one, bolt it on myself, and call it a day. If I can be any further assistance feel free to ask, and good luck...
