Default Nissan and my CATS

alright so here is my dilemma....I have an 04 with 76000 miles and this month was my first smog. So there I go to the smog shop and it fails!! .. My car is completely stock so I was like WTF ....anywho the guy at the shop says my cats are bad so i was like its ok my warranty covers my cats upto 80K .. I Go into Nissan and explain to them my dilemma and long story short my cats are "operational" so my warranty wont cover them however they are not operational enough to pass smog so my question is HOW DO I MAKE MY CATS "UN-OPERATIONAL" SO I CAN GET NEW ONES FROM NISSAN WARRANTY????

Keep in mind that if you go back to Nissan and the cats are "non-operational", after they've already determined that they are operational, they are going to figure out that you sabotaged them and deny you new ones anyway.

a. Failing the smog test, and associating the catalytic converter is a guess. How is the shop certain that the catalytic converter is the culprit?

b. Does Nissan certify smog? Then have them do the certification.

a. 2 shops ran their diagnostic tests and according to them thats what it is ... the printout shows my HC levels are way high. He is certain its the cats, not by a guess but from the results. He is not making me buy em from him so i dont believe hes trying to screw me over, he just told me I need them replaced and he doesnt care where I get em just as long as they pass...

b.I already spent too much trying to smog. It wouldn't pass . . . the smog shop Im at right now is the one I was appointed by the state as part of that fail and get 5 bills to fix your car lol ...

OEM catalytic converters may be found in your regional forum for a reasonable price. Example: https://my350z.com/forum/mid-atlanti...onverters.html

yes but when that bad idea fails, this is how you can actually resolve the issue and move on with your life.

oh then you just answered your own question. sack up and install cats that aren't broken instead of trying to scam your warranty.

I don't know why you are making this so difficult.

You see when Nissan tells you the cats are "operational" but not able to pass emission testing and they dont wanna honor their warranty, it tends to **** people off, especially when each cat is 1k. Sure I can just install the used ones but its not the same as getting new ones.....

What I can't figure out is this ... in most states, if you fail emissions, you can go to a "challenge station" which is run by the state. They will do a more thorough test and if you still fail, they will give you a special certificate. You take the certificate to Nissan which runs the test and says that everything is working within specs, so they sign off on the certificate. You go back to the challenge station and they give you a "free pass" because your car works per factory specs, but fails their test.

There are a bunch of cars that fail the test at the local inspection stations that eventually get a pass by the state via that route.

'each cat'.. listen to davidv and motormouth man, cats are sold as a pair as a one peice unit, there are simply two catalyic convertors in total.

Regardless, in respect to time cost/benefit ratio, you can purchase cats for your car in the regional forum for less than 200$.

That's what they're trying to say. 1k for each cat? Surely the dealership doesn't expect you to believe they're worth even that much, lol.
