Thanks guys. I didn't feel like spending $ on this project, that's why the piping is smaller, the tip is small, its rusty, the welds suck. I know all of this already. I'm just pleased with the way it sounds and its good enough to get me through a couple of months until I can find myself a nice exhaust.

 

Interesting... Nice sound but like everyone said the Z was made for two tips or at least a bigger one, it looks wrong to have such a small thing on there makes me think of a hybrid.

Other than the oddness from behind it sounds good though

 

Yeah, I understand it looks weird. It's just a recycled exhaust and its small, I didnt feel like buying a tip for it to just go to waste soon.

Lol those welds look like I did them half asleep. That metal just didn't want to cooperate. It was very ferrous and wasn't very friendly to keeping a nice consistent bead. I can weld really good, just not that rusty junk.

Kudos for the DIY, I am a big fan of this. That being said also it was a good first attempt. The welds look very poor, There is a lot of material and it doesnt look like great penetration. The design of this exhaust looks fine to me. How you want it to look it in the eye of the builder.

That being said, I would go buy some more Mild Steel, practice welding a bit, Try this again in the same design. Grind the welds down to clean it up and have it ceramic coated or at least paint it in some high temp grill paint, black or silver. It will keep the rust away, protect the welds, and go a long way to cleaning up the underside.

You are so close to a great product. A little practice and maybe another attempt would make all the difference.

I think it sounds great bro, I would just put a bigger tip on and you would be good to go.

 

Thanks MI 35th, I also agree the welds are trash. I wasn't getting any consistency with the welds and idk why. I've been welding for close to 5 years now and I can weld great. This on the other hand, is **** poor welding. And I'm gonna look for a new tip bc I agree, its too small

 

My guesses without closer inspection, You may want to check your current coming from your house, It may be irregular due to it being winter, Also It looks like the Wire Feed is up a bit high and that the pipe you were welding to was a bit contaminated. Clean it up a bit more, I Didn't see too much slag but the pics were not the greatest.

You could've gotten a bad batch of gas to and if thats the case, try swapping tanks out.

Good Luck with it, glad to see you are taking chances, Its not always cheaper to take shortcuts when you have to start over again.

 

They gave me 75/25 mix this last batch and I hate it. I always used 80/20 before and it screwed me all up. I also tacked it all up first, then did my welds after fitting it up. Half way through I realized I hadn't turned my gas back on from taking a break. So its pretty bad. And yes that metal was the original exhaust off of a 96 eclipse that was driven year round in north east ohio, aka the rust belt. It's pretty bad.

 

I think it sounds great..not a fan of the single tip though. I think Z's look very odd with a single exhaust..just my 2 cents

I applaud you trying this on your own. I don't applaud the execution though. You have downgraded your Z. That looks terrible.

It sounds, well that's objective who cares what we think if you're happy.

Just because you tried, doesn't mean you succeed. This is a fail.

After seeing the neat modification that you performed on your Z,I put a pencil
to the bucks I've spent on the exhaust area of my car.Adding exhaust system,
HFC's,headers,tune to make it all work right plus the labor,prolly about 3 grand.
All for maybe 15whp.
You did your for (on the high side)maybe $20.
Plus,it looks OEM!
To think what I could have done with the money I wasted...

welding for 5 years, yet you didn't prep the metal? go spend a couple bucks in material, set up your welder right and try again. a well executed diy will get a much better response on the forums.

I understand that. But I just recycled some old stuff. I just wanted to make something different and free
