Default Need help with Injen CAI Install

I've been trying to use the injen instructions and the garage section from zchickz without much luck so far.

First.. the clips on top of the bumper simply would NOT come off.. 3 of them fine.. last three I had to use a crows foot to get them out and 2 of 'em broke

Then, I was trying to get the stock duct out (the piece in front of the airbox) and it didn't seem possible at all to get it out without taking the bumper off. Finally, in frustration and giving it some 'flex'.. it finally came out.

But now my problem is the vacuum line on the stock intake.. its not even mentioned in the zchickz garage article.. but underneath the stock pipe is a feed to a line. What I can't tell is.. where the injen line is supposed to start.. and where the old stock part should stay. I can't even get it off the stock tube yet.. and therefore can't get the stock tube out yet. I'm fighting like crazy to get the hose off the stock tube but I'm not making any progress.

any help?? How much of the stock line stays and where does the injen filter and hose go into?

hehe.. thanks for bringing up the manifold mounts.. no clue there yet.

Check out this photo.. this is taken underneth the stock airtube. Notice there is a thicker hose.. which goes into a thinner hose.. then is clamped over the stub coming out of the bottom of the airtube.

My question is.. do both hose sections stay? Or does the injen part go right in line with the larger hose? I can get the two hose fittings to move a bit.. but the part that is clamped onto the airtube.. I can't get to budge at all!

Are any of these screws the one for the heat shield? I haven't tried fitting it in there to see where it lines up at all. Injen's black and white xerox instructions suck

Both hose connections stay. Get some pliers to loosen the clamp that is holding them together. it connects like this...

For the heat shield, (not required)
Just unscrew the blue circled one. there is another one on the other end ( 2 screws) Don't unscrew the yellow and red screws.

Thanks for the help... got me through the grey-areas

Getting the filter in and mounted.. alone.. without taking off the bumper was a bit of a challenge, but I managed

Also figuring out best way to force the long silicon hose through the stock air opening took a few tries. Certain more specific help in the HOWTOs would have helped there.

Thanks again!

Cool, nice to see it all done. Yeah the xerox copies were very vague to me too.

I"m not sure what plastic clip you're talking about? Did you remember to remove the radiator guard that is attached to the bumper support?

When you remove that square piece of plastic you'll reuse one of the plastic push pins.

Dan,
I am installing this without the instructions!!!! Pretty easy except for this mounting. I really don't know where the plastic clip is or even what it is that people talk about to mount the filter asssembly. I looked at the injen site for instructions, but none to my avail.Whatg is this about the radiator guard???? Remember, I'm a guy without instructions =) Thanks a lot for the help....it is greatly appreciated

Ok if you look into your grill from the front of the car, you will see the radiator in the middle, but off to each side there are plastic "guards", which are really just rectangular pieces of plastic that are partially protecting the radiator from debris.

The driver's side "guard" is held to the aluminum bumper support brace (that beam going across your field of view from under the car) by two of those plastic push pins. If you don't know what type of push pins I am talking about, pop the hood. They are identical to the 6 push pins holding on the top of the bumper.

Once you have this rectangular piece of plastic out of the car, you are going to see that there is a hole in the bumper brace that will roughly line up with the bracket on the Injen filter adapter. Line it up better (it will take a little force and you might have to loosen the clamp connecting the filter adapter to the silicone hose, but it will line up), then re-use one of the plastic push pins you removed and attach it to the bumper brace.

Once you do this, inspect the cone filter again and make sure it is not touching the radiator fins or the bumper brace. Mine has about 1/8 to 1/4 inch clearance on either side. It's tight but you can position it so it is not touching anything. I'll go out and take some pictures for you.

and here is the bracket attached to the bumper brace. It is hard to see because of the hood latch but you get the idea.

Danny,
Thanks!!!!!! I was looking everywhere for the plastic tab. I saw those two plastic panels, but just assumed that they should stay. I know exactly which plastic tabs you are talking about now. I actually thought putting the intake mound and wedging it inbetween the plastic piece and the aluminum bumper. I can see how it will fit now. Did you remove the plastic panels on both sides for uniformity? I think I may do this. Only temporary because my NISMO kit is coming in next week. I'm actually installing my S-Tune suspension right now. I take the laptop into the garage for quick reference. Thanks again. I owe ya one.

Nah I left it in. The bulk of the power steering cooler is behind the passenger side plasting and I don't want anything hitting that if I can avoid it.

Glad to help.

Ok, its hard to visual through pictures because its so far down in there.

Look at the picture attached, the screw circled in blue is the front screw you will be removing. There is another screw just like it about 8" further back towards the firewall on that same piece of metal. Its hidden by the red wire in the photo.

Take those two screws off. Then slide the heat shield down in there, align the holes from the screws you just removed, and reattach the screws. You are using the same holes and same screws.

The hardest part is just realizing which screws you are looking to take off. Its the blue one outlined below and a similar one further back.

For reference.. that shot is basically looking from the stock airbox area.. back towards the firewall. Look for that brass pipe for reference.

The heat shield looks similar to a L shape.. the long leg of the L goes down covering the side of the engine. The short flat piece lies flat on that grey area where you remove the two screws.
