Default Preventing Rust on Exhaust Components

Hey guys,

Does anyone know what the best way to prevent rust on the exhaust? I tried searching, but couldn't find anyone addressing this issue. I know that certain stainless steels like 304 will not rust as quickly as others, but I would rather just protect all the parts that I will be installing (Berk HFC's, xyz pipe, and nismo exhaust) to keep them looking relatively new and clean. I've read in other places that some people powder coat, while others ceramic coat exhausts, but I wanted to see what people on here did. Also, does anyone know if "paint-on" stuff like this: http://www.everbritecoatings.com/stainless_steel.html work at high temperatures? The website advertises that it can be used on barbecues, but still, I'm not really convinced that it would work on exhaust components.

Thanks
Erik

Those are quality parts and will not rust. At most the bolts will rust but will only be a pain if you ever remove them. During the summer months I clean the muffler and tips with car soap, just to make it shiny, and in the winter months spray the whole undercarriage to make sure salt does not stay on too long. If you do that it is plenty.

If you want to keep your muffler nice and shiny I recommend Blue Mag metal polish. I use it on the tips and bottom of the muffler. Looks shiny and gives protection from the environment.

That's what I was hoping for. However, I saw this picture of the Stillen exhaust, which also uses 304 stainless steel, and then decided to maybe take some preventative measures.

might be a myth but I remember seeing somewhere that if you hook up a ground strap to your exhaust it will help prevent that. I think that is why the stock exhaust has a ground strap, I know the Fujitsubo and probably other JDM systems have a mounting point for that ground strap too.
