Nismo CAI water bypass filter disrupts airflow to MAF???

![Question](https://my350z.com/forum/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I met a fellow forum member (steve?) at CA speedway this past weekend. cool guy; was running his crx.
anyways, he noticed my nismo cai and said the water bypass filter is disrupting airflow to the MAF. he advised me to replace the water bypass w/ a clamped hose and i would probably see a little improvement in whp, but more importantly, my a/f will fall in line.
i already have a TS ecu flash and i still notice a slight crackling sound past ~6500 rpm. i think i am still running lean, but have no wideband proof.
any comments/observations from other people?
i havent switched out the water bypass yet because, alas, my car developed problems (i think drivetrain) that ended my day early at fontana
SES light is on solid too, along w/ a clanking sound from under the car.
