Default 1000th popcharger review

Nothing new to report here but just thought i'd give another thumbs up to the JWT popcharger... finally installed mine yesterday and what everyone has been saying in this forum is true

awesome sound, minor (if none at all) performance gains

love the whistle around 2500-3500 rpms... it's a poor man's turbo

one thing i don't see mentioned often is a change in exhaust note... mine noticeably deepened.. and it's not just me, two passengers in separate occasions noticed a chance in the exhaust note

anyway it's the best 100 bucks i've spent on the car so far

install was very easy... took me 2 hours... but that's because i was working very slowly (ran in to take phone calls, coudln't help myself from cleaning the engine bay etc)

the hardest part was those 2 stupid little screws that attach the heat shield to the plastic intake frame... I ended up only drilling a single hole because i didn't have the recommended drill bit (should be OK...some ppl on the forum run with no screws at all)

oh and another recommendation... make sure to position the heat shield properly before drilling the holes in the plastic... mine ended up a bit too far forward

i was showing my pop charger install to my bro today and I noticed something strange... the bracket that holds the pop charger isn't probably seated on the mounting tab in the car... is this normal?

to clarify, what i mean is, the metal bracket that holds the pop charger in place in the engine bay isn't flush, it's slanted slightly... i did notice it during the install but i just bolted it down as far as it would go (still not flush) and assumed it would settle a bit with a few miles... it didn't

can I bend the bracket to "fit" the way my popcharger is sitting? or did i do something wrong?

from what i understand of your situation, try this. first loosen the area where the bracket meets the tab. then maybe if you adjust the angle of the air filter a bit, then the bracket will be able to sit flush. loosen the area that attaches the black tube to the mass air flow sensor and rotate the mass air flow sensor a bit. or if that doesn't work, then loosen area near the throttle body and maybe rotate the whole tube? i would bend the bracket as a last resort, because you shouldn't have to.

good luck.

It's been a while since I've discussed this, but since I happen to see the 1000th comment about the Pop Charger, I thought I'd throw my .02 in "again".

Anyone looking at a JWT Popcharger should save their money and get a K&N Typhoon kit for their car.

It does sound good, specially at the higher end of the RPM spectrum, and DOES in fact give you some HP improvement.

I'm currently stock on exhaust, and just about everyone whos seen/heard my car figures I changed mine, and most of them love the sound.

It also has that "whistle" affect as well as you're breaking 3k.

One of my mods is my JWT flywheel and Nismo clutch combo, so I believe it adds to the affect but the car definetly pulls more when ramping up through max rpm/speed vs stock with a clear 'kick'passing 4500.

I had the JWT pop charger, I wouldn't knock it or anything, but after upgrading from the JWT to the K&N, I know there is a big improvement all the way around.

I had the pop charger first, then the flywheel & clutch upgrade, before I went to the K&N.

I'm currently waiting for my APS Twin Turbo kit, so all of this is not going to be an issue (hopefully shortly).

thanks....

you never really explained why we should go with a k&N typhoon intake.

Sorry I guess I wasn't "trying to explain" it... It was literally just commentary but I suppose I could throw in some more.

The pop charger, even with the heat shield, is still residing within the engine compartment.

The K&N although is also in the engine compartment, does have FORCED AIR from the FRONT of the car being delivered to where the K&N filter within it's own compartment which I believe also acts as a heat shield.

One of the ideas about changing your intake is to get "more air" and "colder air" into your engine.

The Pop charger solves 1/2 of this problem but you're still sucking up the warmer air from the engine compartment.

Of course you could go further and heat shield wrap your intake, etc..etc.. but I don't think that is worth the time/effort at this level.

I did mention, that in my opinion, the K&N did seem to allow my engine to respond/accelerate better than when I had the popcharger.

Something I did explain is that I a likely to be one of the few people that actually had a pop charger, and then upgraded to a K&N vs most people buying one or the other and then simply standing by their decision.

I also didn't want this to turn into a flaming thread either...

This is just "my experience" this isn't "science".

I have the JWT Popcharger - the intake sound is sweet - just like everyone said.

I make sure I installed it very carefully and tightened everything and make sure the angles were correct on the MAF and the PopCharger. I have not stalled - I purposely drop it into neutral at high speed to check it out.

Very satisfied with it. Love the sound - the sound makes me feel like I am faster... passengers are impressed.

I don't know about my MPG - it stayed around the same.

I still get 15 city/27 highway...

One thing that's a down - sometimes the sound is so loud it draws unwanted attention from pedestrians (who are angry cause they think I am speeding when in fact I am just redlining in low gear) or cops.

Since you mentioned it, I was curious about what computer is showing your AVG MPG is "right now".

I pound my car regularly, I've got 16.7 on avg. When I reset after "easy" highway driving I get about 25/26 however the way I normally drive, I tend to average 22.

I don't remember my pop charger being "so loud" as your describing, although redlining, in low gears, in general traffic, will draw the attention of just about anyone, regardless of what intake or exhaust you're running. and I would say you'd get extra attention from cops.

You do noy need to screw the heat sheild into the existing air intake port. (plasic intake fram)
Just slide the portion of the heat shild that has the screw holes into the inside of the the air intake port. If you attached the bottom of the heat shield properly, it fits as "snug as a bug"
Have had mine in for a month and has not moved at all.
Hope this helps!!!!

Cool My First Mod

Just installed mine over the weekend. It's my first mod...ever! It was much easier than expected and I'm a newb at this.

The sound isn't as loud as I expected. It's lounder than stock and sounds a little more aggressive, but I wish it was a little louder. since it's my first mod, I'm very pleased with the results. Like everyone has said in the past...modding is so addicting! I can't wait to get started on mod #2!

I don't feel any additional power (which I didn't expect due to the threads I've read) but my RPMs definitely pull faster. I find myself needing to shift more often than b4. Can't beat the mod for the price!!

I JUST finished installing my popcharger and taking it for a test drive. It was a short, 30 minute install with interuptions. I don't care if the popcharger took away 10 horsepower, the sound alone is worth the $100. Sorry if I'm preaching, but I'm excited about my new mod. 1 more vote for the pop-charger... now for the test pipes...

P.S. I also didn't screw into the existing intake port and it fit perfectly.

Had mine on for about a month now and I love it. It sounds great and also looks great under the hood. A clever way I tackled those two little intake screws was to line up the shield and mark the holes with a marker. Then I took a paper clip (while holding it with a pair of pliers) and heated it up and burned the holes into the plastic. Worked perfectly, tried the drill first but not enough room to work with.

Depends on the dealership, some do aftermarket installs, but most of them will just follow the instructions given with the product and charge you an arm and a leg for it. Better off doing it yourself and saving some money. Easy install, just be careful handling the MAF sensor.

Hey manofsteele did you dyno before and after popcharger/exhaust mods? I am getting mine installed today and the shop doing the work is putting my Z on the dyno before and after mods. I will post results.

I'd like to see those. I've searched so many threads and boards but yet to see any dyno charts showing results, especially b4 and after. Keep us posted.
