Default Pro-1 Headers Installed - Review

Ok, so I finally decided to splurge and get the Pro-1 Headers that Moog (a member here) has been trying to sell for a while - as far as I know, I'm one of the first people to have installed these headers on a Z/G... First off, I got a great deal from Moog on these headers, and since he can get you any Pro-1 part you need, contact him for pricing (I don't know if I want to post how much I paid for them) - what I do know is that installation is a ***** with headers... it took my mechanic about 9 hrs to install these so it cost a pretty penny ($420) - SGP in Houston quoted me $560, so it was still cheaper - the only downside is that I was without the G for a day and a half (if I would have known it was going to be that long, I would have sent my ECU off to TS) - Patrick, my mechanic, said that the headers fit like a dream when he finally got to putting them on (lots of stuff that has to be removed in order to get to them) - you can barely see them from the engine bay, but if you look really hard, they do look nice...

On to my impressions:

When I first started the car up, it was slightly louder, and it seems that the tone of the exhaust at idle is slightly deeper as well - revving it in neutral is a dream... it sounds even meaner than before... cruising around town, they are not much louder than before, which is a good thing... however, when you get on it they really open up and let out a roar above 3500 rpms that is pure bliss... the power band seems to be somewhat wider, with the power "jolt" I used to feel only above 4000 rpms now kicking in about 5-600 rpms sooner...I really think the reflash will further enhance the gains of these... the only downside is that a slight rasp has popped it's head up again around 2500 rpms, but it is much less noticible than ever before - it actually kinda blends in with the new sound... so for the total investment I have in these (under $800), I don't think there is a better header on the market - I will go to dyno these in probably two to three weeks to see what gains are made, but I'm guessing around 10 whp and around the same amount of torque - the power coming on sooner in the rev range is worth it alone... so I would recommend these headers over any other header out there right now besides the Crawford's and maybe the Xerd's (but not 100% comparable)...

hopefully this will influence some people to give these a try, I really think they were worth the investment...

Very happy that everything turned out well. Please let me know how it turns out after a few days of driving.

Did you happen to dyno before the headers?

I wouldn't count on the mid-October date. It's a tentative 4-6 weeks from now. Short shifters should be coming within a month though.

I did dyno before - just waiting to find some time to do some post-header dynos... I want to send my ECU off to TS anyways, so I'll want to have before and after dynos with that as well...

Like I said before, I'm guessing 10 hp, 10 tq - I hope

William - hopefully the rasp will go away in a week or so after the insides of the headers are burnt out - I've found with every exhaust mod I've done so far, it takes about 2 weeks before you get the "true" sound and feel of the mod, so I'll keep everyone updated...

btw - William, I heard that I am the 2nd person to have these, is that true? I think the first set went to someone in Sweden if I'm not mistaken... just wondering, it's cool to say you were the "first" to do something...

Yes, there is a guy in Sweden that has them. You are the first in the United States though!

no dynos yet - I'm been super busy, since I'm renovating a house right now and getting ready for our wedding (Nov. 27th) - I will have a dyno before then since I plan to send my ECU to Technosquare while I'm on my honeymoon...

As for any updates - the headers are doing great! I got some rattles worked out that resulted from the installers not bolting down the crossmember they removed correctly, so I'm a happy camper now... they sound great, and the pull above 3500 rpms is amazing, I can really feel more of a difference after the headers than after any other mod I've done... definitely worth the $$$ and the trouble - I just saw where they just got the first shipment of these in, so contact Moog to order your set... I'm not sure what the going price on these, but they are worth every bit of $800-1000 imo...

I'll probably pick up another set from the warehouse to show local buyers this week if you want to check them out Paul. I'm oh so tempted to put them on my car, but my wheels are still being paid off =/.

Yea i also installed the headers that i bought from the top speed group buy. The experience i had with it is exactly as you described.. After 3500 rpm, you really start to feel the headers... I also noticed that during high speeds, the headers really help your car accelerate alot faster... I remember being on the highway doing about 90mph and then i want WOT wanting to see how fast my car would accelerate.. And i just took my eyes off the dashboard for about a second to pay attention to the road because i was driving so fast, when i looked down on the dashboard i was already doing 120mph.. I am pretty sure that before the header install my car wouldn't have reached speeds up to 120 mph from 90 mph as quickly as it does now... Im pretty happy with the headers and i only bought them for $230 shipped... These headers are definitely the best bang for the buck out of all headers..

great. now its all up to whether the guy whos gonna install for me has time to get them on befor tuesday =/. doesnt seem too promising its a loong job. Did you guys just re-use the gaskets? Any other experiences with these headers? The only reason i started having doubts was I figured if i was payin 350-400 for install I should just come up with the cash and go for the crawfords, but I think I'm just going to do this now or else it will prob never happen

well, after you pay $1200 for Crawfords... you STILL have to pay $400 or so to have them installed

$700 vs $1600 = no brainer for me
