Default DC sport headers

Hey Im abaout to get DC sport headers and I am wondering if it adds any Top end HP? because crawford adds a **** load of power up top

The reason i am asking is because after i get the headers i am gonna get my ECU reflashed and it would be point less to get headers that dont add hp uptop with a 7200 redline

Thanks
Josh

I beleive it is mostly midrange power, but they should add some up top. I am running them b/c I got the SS headers for $365 and installed them myself, what I really wanted was crawford headers though, you are right crawfords will add alot up top!

Any header is going to improve power in the mid and top range... DC Sports strong suit is in the 4500-6000 rpm range.

We have a single set left that we are blowing out for $375 shipped (ceramic coated)!

Surprisingly, they are very nice. Good welds, near equal length.

To answer your question... if you want the best top end power, you already have a good start with the Borla TD. I used to have a Borla TD on my car and my top-end HP numbers were better than now. Crawford headers would be the best choice. They were on my list of things to buy when Summit had their little price mixup. I couldn't pass up the Stainless DC headers for $365 shipped.

looking at the dyno I detail below from a previous post, no the Dc Sports header does not add top end power.

September 2004 Turbo & High-Tech Performance magazine, page 42. Dc Sport header dyno test article. Car also has AEM CAI, Invida exhaust, Hyper ground kit and Unorthodox Racing pulleys.

Sorry I don't own a scanner. The magazine does have the article online, but it does NOT show you the dyno plot allows you to see what is really going on.

I've seen people quote this test on the Dc Sports header, spitting out the following quote in so many words. "The real gains were generated in the mid-range where the VQ35DE needs it most, with a gain of 9.1hp and 12.5hp". Which is true, but a simple look at the dyno plot reveals these numbers only occur for a brief moment in the power band, a whole 500rpms worth.

Also mentioned in the text it says the peak values for the header are, +1.1hp and 5.9ft lbs. To be fair, I'll make a attempt to translate the dyno plot from a few rpm level's.

2500rpms
hp+1
tq+6

3500rpms
hp+3
tq+8

3750rpms (mid range blip described in text)
hp+9.3hp
tq+12.5

4500rpms
hp+2
tq+5

5500rpms
hp+2
tq+2

6000rpms
hp+2
tq+2

6300rpms to redline
hp+0
tq+0

I think one problem with the Z is, you cant be cheap. This car demonstrates the old adage: "You get what you pay for". The Z is such a refined and highly tuned car that it takes research and time to extract the most HP, this costs money. I say save the $400 or so you'd spend on DC headers and get Crawford or Alphawerks headers. You'll get more gains and you wont want to replace them anytime soon.

Now don't get me wrong, the DC sports headers are good. I'd say they are comparable to the nismo headers in quality(their quality/constuction is superb), and maybe even performance. They are definately better than borla or stillen. The only header I would prefer over DC is the Crawford(maybe alphaworks, but they not even out). Crawford headers are considered long headers. Long headers usually delete the cats, these don't, that's why they are so much better. Doug crawford has managed to squeeze a set of long headers in a short header's space.

The DC headers I had on mine did not add but 1-2 hp on the top end. But mid range was close to twelve hp. I don't know if an ecu would have helped or not, but the car ran way rich on the top end.

Just because your engine will be able to rev 7100 RPM after the re-flash, does not mean you should rev it that high. Your existing stock cam will only allow you to PULL to 6500-6700 RPM. Raising the rev limiter just keeps up from bounzing off the rev limiter. ADD bigger cams and you will be able to pull to 7100. The re-flash also corrects your air to fuel ratio all the way to top RPMs.
