Question Rattle

Well, after driving 1k miles this weekend on poor roads I seem to have developed 2 small rattles. One is in the driver door pannel. When I press on the pannel just above the arm rest it stops. The other is in the shifter, its a very small 'ticking' type noise, and when I push down on the shifter it stops as well, it feels like its inside the boot. Should I take it to the dealer or try and do something myself? Anyone else had any of these? thanks

You can fix the shifter rattle yourself. You could probably resolve the door rattle also, if you care to do the work. Me personally, I'd fix the door. The dealer will cause more problems than resolutions.

Any ideas on what they are or the best way to fix them?

I think the shifter rattle is from the little spacer ring that's under the shift ****... if you've got the rattle then your **** is not screwed down all the way. But the problem is that you don't want to have a crooked ****. So you gotta take off the whole surround around the shifter and get a pair of heavy plyers to grip the shifter under the boot. Then use a rag and either a cresent wrench or another pair of plyers and a RAG, so you don't jack up your ****, and unscrew the ****. You'll have to fit something in between the **** and the little spacer to take up the slack... I used some paper. You need to use two plyers so you don't torque your shifter.

The door rattle is probably either the foam inside the door panel that's come loose (so glue it) or it's just rattling against the metal door. you have to remove the whole interior door panel and check. Use either thin foam or felt to keep it from making the rattle. I'd suggest using a big sheet of felt and spray gluing the back of it then attaching. The rattle kits dealers use have sticky felt pieces and sticky foam strips. I got a rattle kit from a toyota dealership I used to work at. The kits are like $250 but I got a barely used one for free. You can make the same stuff though.

Do a search since almost all of the rattles have been covered... most of the best solutions are from about 2 years ago so make sure you've got that old of posts visible in your preferences.

Good luck.
