Anyone heard of "Color Sanding"?
Has anyone heard of “color sanding”?
My 350 Redline has slight orange peel and my dealer had a Nissan “paint expert” examine it. He recommended the “color sanding” and they will pay for it.
My questions:
1. Will it take care of the problem or are they just trying to appease me?
2. Should I have it done?
3. Will it cause any problems down the road? It hasn’t had any problem with the chipping some people have mentioned.
4. Will I need another clear coat after they are finished?
5. Any other comments are welcomed.
Thanks for any help you can give me. It’s scheduled to go in 02/24/2003.

yeah sounds like wetsanding... I dont think their gonna repaint the clear coat, so you will end up with a thin layer of paint that might chip or fade easily.
unless your paints really bad, Id live with it. well actually I do live with it.

I'm in the same situation however I'm only going to have it done on a few small areas where it is particularly noticable (the upper diagonal section of the doors and a few other spots. I would not do it on the front bumper or hood since those areas are at high risk of being hit by road debris. Also, it's much less noticable there.
Let me know how good a job your shop does if you go through with it.

Infact there are different way to do wetsanding. You can have someone do it for $100, or you can go to the pros. I can't remember the URL, but I think it was the Meguirs website which had the detailed process of wetsanding. Trust me...to do the wetsanding like on a restoration project would cost you much much more than $100.
And it's not a good idea to sand the top layer of the clearcoat off on the front. I will probably have the quarter panels done.

Yes, the Meguairs web site advocates starting out with 2500 grit paper and following a number of elaborate precautions not to cause extra scratching during the process. They recommend using compounds to bring out the shine after the 2500 grit paper.
