Default Can bad clutch make tranny grind?

A told dealer tranny is grinding intermittently. Dealer tells me clutch is bad and that a clutch that is burned out can not property disengage/engage, and cause the tranny to grind.

Is this true?

When my clutch went the mechanic told me that it was so messed up that it damaged my tranny. My tranny had all kinds of heat damage and spots. Also my 3rd gear and 5th were grinding like crazy.

Yeah, a bad clutch could definitely cause shifting problems. My last car, '94 Integra, had its clutch go out, but it was still gripping fine. It wasn't releasing properly, and making shifting very difficult.

They replaced the clutch, tranny, fly wheel and throwout bearings. I had to pay for the flywheel which was 1100 dollars.

please tell me you accidentally put a extra digit in the price of the flywheel? theres no way it cost 1k! you can get a brand new aftermarket installed for less. Looks to me like they were making you pay for the labor for the full install and the flywheel.

the tranny shifts w/o a clutch, its synchronized. You are able to shift up w/o any clutch, if it grinds its because the syncro is going bad.

A failing clutch will NOT cause shifting/grinding problems. But a failing clutch master cylinder, or clutch slave cylinder, will.

In order to shift smoothly, the clutch must fully disengage. That's the job of the clutch hydraulic system (master and slave cylinder.)

When the clutch itself fails, it doesn fully engage. Since you want the clutch disengaged for shifting, a failing clutch will not cause shifting problems.

A clutch in my last car failed and caused shifting/engagement problems. One of the springs from the sprung hub of the clutch came out. At first it may have only been slightly dislodged which made shifting difficult. Eventually it became separated from the hub and would not allow the clutch to engage the flywheel. A new clutch/flywheel solved the problem.

Nope no extra digit. I got it done at nissan. I was told that I'f i bought a aftermarket one my warranty would be void. Well I think my 2nd gear is messing up so i'm glad that I did not get a aftermarket flywheel.

While I don't know the thread starter's symtoms / damage, I will say that, yes, a bad clutch can cause shifting problems. My hydraulic parts were fine, but because my clutch basically fell apart (187k mi.), it wasn't operating properly. When my local mechanic took it apart, pieces fell out. I believe part of the destroyed parts was the throw-out bearing / fork assembly, so it wasn't fully disengaging the clutch when the pedal was pressed, causing difficult shifting without rev matching.

I just got a new tranny under warranty and put in a JWT clutch and flywheel. When the car is warm it does not shift very well. From a stop it is very difficult to put it into gear. It feels like the clutch doesn't fully disengage. The dealer told me that the clutch and flywheel voided my warranty so now I've got to take it to my local Z shop. Has anyone else experienced this??
