Default sending unit problem?

ok, if anyone cares, i did search damnit! ive looked at lots and lots of post about the fuel problems, mainly about the recall, which im not interested in.

my problem is this: for the past week or so, my fuel gauge has been messing up, going from half a tank(which i had) to empty in 2 miles( then it flashes at me and tells me i have 150+ miles till empty, wtf? then it will go to 30 then back to 150. then after a while it will slowly go back up. im thinking it is the sending unit that is messed up. thats a $72 purchase i just dont want to make for the hell of it. then i started thinking, if the thing went out. it would stay on E and not tell me anything about 150 miles to empty or 30 right?

could it be a short? anyone had/heard of a problem like this? any suggestions?

im not under warranty so i would appreciate any help or suggestions to try.
thanks a lot

eric

I have the same problem. After 2 1/2 weeks in the shop and new sending units, still not resolved. I opened the instrument combination unit (gage cluster) tonight and found a piece of broken copper wire off the back of the fuel gage. It appear to have come from the resistive winding at the back of the gage. Nissan said they changed the combination meter, but mine appears to be my original one. I can tell by the detailing fluid that has stained the face plate.
