Window ripped a chunk off my roof
I just spent 2 hours searching for a thread I read a while ago about the problem I just experienced. I have a 2004 Z, and up until last week, I never experienced a problem with my windows... 'til now. A friend of a friend and I were going to the grocery store for some bbq supplies when it happened. It's on the passenger side, and I was obviously driving so I did not see what happened. My theory is, when he was opening the door, the window didn't lower far enough to clear the plastic piece on the roof of the car, and the window pulled/broke-off a piece of it. The only thing holding the piece in place now is a strip of adhesive foam. The guy I was with is pretty oblivious to what's going on around him, and he didn't even know what happened until I pointed it. It's too dark to snap a pic of it now, but I will post them tomorrow hopefully. Anyone have any feedback on this situation? I'm praying that the warranty will cover it because of all the window motor problems, but this isn't a common occurence so who knows.
*EDIT: filled in some details of the story

Was it a one time event or is the window now broken and it won't drop down when the door is opened?
If the window motor is broke and you're still under warranty, you can get the window motor fixed. Don't know if Nissan will cover collateral damage. If the window motor is working, then I doubt warranty will cover the damage.

I'm glad you mentioned that point, this is what scares me. Looking at the broken piece and the window, its easy to see that the very point of the glass, or the edge if you will, was slightly stuck behind the plastic piece. Judging by how the plastic broke, it all seems to add up, but when it comes to the warranty I don't think the story will hold water. Now the window is still very close to the roof when the door is shut, however, its a hard call to make since the plastic piece is already broken off, and I can't really put it back into its original position. I'm gonna go snap a pic right now.
Here are the pics, and hopefully you guys can see how confused and pissed off I am about this. In case this is mentioned, the damage was not caused by vandalism, nor by something striking the car. If you look closely, part of the plastic is kind of sticking up, which rules out any baseballs or whatever hitting the car. Feedback is much appreciated.
The window on mine hasnt gone down before, when I opened it, but it just kind of forced its way back in.
I would tell your friend to not slam his door so damn hard, he really f'd up your car, and I am suprised the window didnt break.

But it seems like every person that rides in my car always slams the door, and the rear hatch, way too hard. It's a car door not the door to a vault. Either way I just want to see if anyone else has been in this situation, so I can have some kind of ammunition when I go to Nissan.
Wow, thats brutal. I cant believe the window didnt break as well. Im not too sure what the dealership is going to say. Thats a hard story to sell. It sucks because its what most likely happened though!
I've searched and searched... still haven't heard of this happening to anyone else. I can't take the car in for another week so I guess I'll just have to keep the fingers crossed and hope Nissan doesn't bend me over on this one.

As members have mentioned, the windows seal about 1/4 inch after the door is closed. Nissan cautions against disconecting the battery, then closing the door. Your damage is unusual. Best of luck.
Interestingly, I have a 04 G35 coupe. I was at the self service car wash just the other day when my door would not close. The doors of the G are extremely heavy, so I never slam them. If they don't close on their own, I just give them a butt bump. Anyway, after a few soft tries I looked closer, and determined the cause to be my window. It wasn't self adjusting like they do on the Z & the G. When you open the door the window goes down like .25 of an inch, and it goes up when you shut it. Well, needless to say it wasn't going down that .25 of an inch. So upon shutting the door the glass was hitting the plastic cover.
I had to turn my key ACC on to reset the window motor I guess. It hasn't done it since.

The only explanation I can come up with at this point, is that the window somehow got rotated in it's housing inside the door, causing the corner to stick up too far. I do know that when my doors are open, windows up, the glass can be maneuvered a degree or two, and they've been that way since I bought the car two years ago.
My passenger window doesnt go down at all though. It just stays all the way up. I know its supposed to drop a little when you open the door. But it doesnt. My drivers door doesnt go down either, but if you push it down that little bit, it will go back up when you shut the door. My dealership told me they could not fix it because it was an adjustment repair, blah blah blah. I just didnt feel like haggling with them. Needless to say, I have had my car for over a year, the windows dont drop, and my roof did not do that!
I hope you are still undr warranty, this ALMOST happened to me the first night my window motor started acting up. Thank god I caught it. Eventually, like everyone else with a Z (I believe), the window motor dies and I replaced it myself since my warranty was up. I have had 5 Nissans since 95 and the window motors are always the first things to die on the car at a very young age. If you are not under warranty, then I think you are SOL because they will just tel you that your motor is almost dead so its not their fault.
