Houston we have a problem
My '06 developed a strange problem this afternoon. I'd been driving for a while so it was fully warmed up, and all of the sudden under gentle acceleration at around 3000RPM the tach started jumping around and the engine started hesitating and jerking and the service engine light came on. Below 3000RPM it runs just like normal, no issues at all. Sounds normal, runs smooth. But as soon as it reaches about 3000RPM the tach starts jumping around again and the motor sputters etc... Even standing still with no load on it, if I reved it over 3000....same thing. After it sat for about an hour I took for a short drive. At first it seemed OK, I took it gently up to around 4000 a couple times without any issues. Then a couple miles later at about 3500RPM it started again. Still.....below 3000 is OK. Service engine light is still lit.
I had it serviced about 1000miles ago. I just checked the oil and the oil level is still fine. It's a good 3/4 of the way up to the H mark. I have to fly to Sacramento and back tomorrow, so I'm going to see if I can get it in to the dealer tomorrow afternoon. I hope they give me a loaner....I just sold my other car.
I put 100,000 miles on my Accord with zero problems......

Would bad gas cause the service engine light to come on? I just hope it's something simple. I'd think if it were mechanical it would have problems no matter the RPM. Bad coil(s) maybe? I dunno. I'm about to board my flight back to Portland. I'll have to see if the dealer can get it in this afternoon or tomorrow.
and the verdict is......crank position sensor. If anyone's in the Portland area, Wilsonville Nissan is where you want to go. They're overnighting the part, and provided a rental at their expense. They've been great to work with.
