I made the mistake of checking in the first time at a gas station late at night. It took me forever to get the damn thing back in

Reminds me of the old LP Records----Trying to (If your buzzed) line up the hole in the center of the album. My bright idea was to put the album hole to my eye and lower my head---After several poked eyes , it worked well.

Where theres a will, theres a way

With practice, I have no problems now....except I usually need a damn flashlight to even see the hole and the guides which hinder as much as help.

great visual...thanks

Yeah, the Z dipstick gets easier the more you do it. I felt like an idiot at the gas station though. Everyone was looking at me and probably thinking "aweeeee look, she doesn't know how to check her oil"

I had 5 ppl ask if needed help *sigh*

yeah really. I mean, i can understand how some of you think it's in an odd place, but it's not rocket science. The only problem is the hole isn't visable at night which makes it harder. The dipstick is bent so it will definately get on the intake tube, but you should already have a napkin of some sort to check the oil anyways so you can easily use that to wipe off the oil on the intake or anywhere else it may get a bit on.

Also, i'm glad that the dipstick is hard to pull out. My friend with his turbo car, the dipstick is really loose and he redlined his car and the dipstick blew out. oil all over the engine bay.

Man, I cant believe I just now found this thread. I hate the damn dipstick on my 03 with a passion that can never be explained.

My own personal hell will be me locked in a garage with a 350z and forced to check the oil level over and over for eternity.

Apparently there were enough complaints about it, they fixed the issue on the '07s.

I don't understand how it's so difficult. The first couple times sucked, but the advantage of being a human is that you can "learn".

None of us have a problem checking it. Its the convenience. Its a pain when you try to check the oil when its hot. You get such a sloppy reading compared to checking it first thing in the morning. The bends sure don't help to pull it straight out - Sort of like trying to pull out in time while knocking the boots in the passenger seat of the Z

It gets easier the more you do it. It took me about 5min to get it back in the first time. After like a year, its really nothing.

check your oil after its been sitting for a while like in the morning and it will be clear as day. if you check it after it has been running oil splashes are all up in the dip stick hole so when you stick clean dipstick in there oil thats on walls gets on it and creates all this confusion. its that simple

Yeahhh Its a pain in the ***..only had my car for about a month..and i checked my oil a couple times so far...the first time i was first looking around for a min. wondering well damn, where the hell is the freaking sick. after finding it..it took me another good min to actually remove it out of the hole. and then reading it was another story. Annddd putting the thing back in the correct way was a total pain ..Oh well? Will just get used to it over time i suppose.
