How can you tell if you have tire feathering?
I am not sure if i have this but my ride has gotten louder. I can take pictures of my tires and post them here. Can you guys look them over to see if they do have that problem.
When you slow down below 20-30 MPH it sounds like a growl or a roar. You really can't see it very well in pictures but you can feel it with your hand. Turn your wheels all the way to the left and feel the inner most row of tread on the front driver's side tire. Run your hand over this row of tread starting at the top and then down toward the front of the tire (counter clockwise if you are looking at the tire as it sits on the rim). It should feel fairly smooth and even this direction.
Now feel it running your hand in the OTHER direction (clockwise). It'll feel bumpy and uneven. NSANY described it best. He said that it was like petting a cat. If you run your hand the "right" way it feels smooth but the wrong way feels rough.
Hope that helps.

I've read most of the tire Feathering/cupping threads. I have also read the TSP on the tire noise and am not satisfied with what the dealers are instructed to do, which is essentially swapping tires. As we all do, I want new tires. I have 4k miles and the roar is now very noticable. I do not merely want a bandaid fix. Has anyone been "forced" to do the tire swap?
