Angry Has anyone needed a new tranny after 10K miles?

I have 13,434 miles and I got a 3rd gear grind this evening and I'm wondering if it could be a sign of bad or failing transmission, or it could have just bad shifting

Any help would be appreciated!

After it happened I drove it hard for an hour and I never got any more grinding so I'm almost 99.5 percent positive it was my foot being lazy

Probably it is your foot getting lazy or your car is not warmed up yet. I have had the smae thing happen to me a coule of times and now have 20K miles, with no real problems.

yup your tranny's bad. its covered under the powertrain warranty 60k miles, go replace it asap. your 3rd gear synchro probably looks like swiss cheese and will only get worse with time. don't blame your driving, trust me.

That is exactly how mine began. I am getting my tranny replaced this week or next. It starts with 3rd when cold, then 2nd and 3rd all the time unless rev matched, and then 5th and 6th problems. Right now I can not get into 5th at all, and I grind 2nd and 3rd.

I am just shy of 12k miles, my problems began around 6-8k, and got worse from there.

In reality, every transmission is defective I am thinking, but they just don't want to do a recall on it for cost reasons. Not one person has encountered a dealer putting up any kind of a fight for a tranny replacement. They are on the 3rd part number tranny. The good news is, all signs point to this 3rd part number tranny as fixing all the problems finally.

I don't know if this means anything, but when I let mt father drive my Z, he grinds the crap out of the geers. He has been driving a stick for over 40 years and I would consider him to be an excellent driver. It is odd to me that when he drives my car, he has grinding problems, but when I drive it I have no problems at all? I was just thinking that some of these tranny problems might be due to specific driving style. I have 20K miles on my car.

Well, I'm starting to feel this tranny issue. It not major yet. Just a few grind here and there. Tough shifting now. I only have 7500 miles on it.

However, my tranny is making all these wierd noises. like every time i shift, feels like something is falling apart. Then my shifter is shaking uncontrollabily and valve noises when i accelerate.

**** sounds like i'm driving a old peto car or some ****. But I guess i wait until that **** falls apart before i bring it in.

Was told by the Elk Grove dealership that it was a normal thing.

Mine hasn't grinded in about a week. I'm sure it will come back a lot worse when the weather gets colder. When I mentioned it to the service department they told me it may be the master or slave cylinder. I told him I'm pretty sure it's transmission cause there are a lot of people having this problem. He said he's heard of no problems with the Z's transmissions. I wish that these service guys were informed about what is going on.

Is there anyone out there with a low VIN # who hasn't had their tranny replaced?

I've got an early VIN (purchased the car last October) but I haven't had a chance to drive my car too much this past year because I've been too busy. I've got a little less than 3,000 miles and haven't noticed anything too abnormal with my tranny. (but then again, I've been babying it...)

Is it just a matter of time before I need to take it in for a replacement?

Got my car in August 2002, vin#235. I have 20K miles on my car and no tranny problems. I don't baby my car, and I have been doing a lot of quick starts where I drop the clutch. The only thing that I have is the Chatter noise, when the clutch is not engaged, but can't really hear it unless I am in my garage or a closed in space.

The Tranny problem is not a universal issue, as I know 4 other people that have had theri Z's for a while, and no tranny problems.

I have not had any major tranny problems. There is some grinding with 3rd every now and then, but I've found that it is just because I get lazy with the 2-3 shift. I dont get a grind at all if i think about the shift and make sure my clutch is down to the floor.
