Default Console around shifter removal

What's the easiest way to remove the console around the MT off without scaring it up? Want to install my NISMO GT shift ****.

I don't belive you need to remove the console to install the shift ****.

The OEM shift know is on very thightly... I've seen a few posts of people who wrap a towel around the lower portion of the shift **** and use a Channel Lock pliers over the towel to twist it off.

Hope that helps.

To avoid transmission damage, it's also recommended to pop up the trim ring around the boot, and vise grip the shifter rod, before you turn the ****.

I have to replace that console piece so knowing if anyone has removed the boot with the jillion screws in the mount would be helpful.
