Default Troubles with purging air from cooling system...

So I finished swapping in my motor. Runs great except that the motor began to overheat when driven, and cools down at idle. So I realize that this is due to air being in the cooling system. When I had poured the coolant into the radiator, I did not open up the purge valve on the heater pipe. So today I opened the purge valve, and filled the radiator slowly with 1/4 bottle of coolant before fluid spilled out of the purge valve. I closed everything up and followed the service manual of letting it warm to operating temperature, 3k rpm for 10 secs...etc. I kept the heater on while doing this. After letting the motor cool for 30 mins or so, I reopened the radiator expecting to fill it with a lot more coolant. However, to my surprise, the radiator was completely filled. The resevoir also seemed to be at the same level. Is this normal or should I be filling it with a lot more fluid? How many times/ when should I be opening up the purge valve during this procedure. When doing these procedure, the temperature needle stays normal and the temps aren't increasing, so I'm hoping that I'm doing something right. Thanks!

Get one of the funnels mentioned in this thread. I got mine from amazon.com, and it works exactly as described.

Hopefully this problem is only air in the lines, if so simply follow the FSM's method of purging the air. If you have issues getting that to work I've had good results by parking on a steep incline (or using a jack and stands). It seems to really help with purging the air out. If I had really stubborn air and the car doesn't overheat immediately, I sometimes try driving up a steep incline/hill while carefully watching the needle. It is almost immediately noticable that the incline is helping to get the fluid moving. Drive, check, park - over and over for tough air. The key thing being include an incline of some sort and make sure to keep fluid in the reservoir.
