Dealer wants to "repair" transmission
Is this normal protocol or are they short changing me? This is a brand new car. Should I expect anything less than a NEW transmission? Having grinding going into 3rd on cold mornings. Girl in service department said one other Z had the same thing and they fixed it the way they'll be doing mine
opinions? suggestions?

First I've heard of this?? Can you see if you can get more info on what they will be "repairing". I'll be glad to research it for you with a tad bit more info on what they are doing.
Yea sure. They gave me a printout of all the parts. There were 6 parts total I believe. One was a pin...another was something specific for 3rd gear (syncros maybe??). I'll post it at lunch...
Thanks Jeff

will be bad, but the local Nissan Dealer most likely does not have experience in repairing a Getrag transmission.
You might have Jeff at Performance in Duarte give you his best opinion.
This is sounding like Lemon LAW time.
IF they put in a fifth trans, Nissan might ask the Germans (Getrag) to step to the plate and design a replacement 6spd. One like the Audi

Hehe, nawh.... I do plan on driving down there from portland oregon this summer to get the nismo coilovers and sways installed by you guys... Can't beat your prices and, I hope, service.
As for the tranny, I heard from my dealer that the hubs were beefed up too... I hope when my 04 arrives the tranny is trouble free!

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Been busy getting the last cars and orders out for Christmas. These parts are the standard rebuild parts, but my question is (which I've not gotten an answer to yet) is whats changed in the latest generation tranny's. I heard through the grapevine that the hubs and baulk rings have been changed to a beefier unit although I've been unable to verify this. If it is the case then your still getting the old style ones by those part numbers. The call center should be open on Friday and I'll see if I can get someone to be straight up with me. At my store we don't bother rebuilding them as the labor would equal the cost of a new replacement. Figure we may as well give the customer the latest design.

it's not a design problem, my trans shifts strong, so do most others...3 trannis in a row indicate abuse...you can beat anything into submission

Also, I am not the only one who is still having this issue after getting 4th generation tranny replace. At this point, I don't thinks its the tranny. I think its something else. Like pressure plate, or the clutch hydralic system or even master cylinder.
I live in BC Canada and I'm having the same 2nd and 3rd gear grind many people are experiencing. My dealer couldn't reproduce the 2nd and 3rd gear grinds and basically told me that unless they can reproduce them they won't do anything about it! It doesn't grind all the time and definately happens on cold mornings more often but it shouldn't be grinding anytime IMO. They told me if it gets worse then they would repair the transmission instead of replacing it also. They told me that it would take at least a week to rebuild trying to discourage me I'm thinking. I'm going to complain again to try and get a new replacement which would be cheaper like Jason pointed out, then labour rebuilding my current one.

sorry ssk0771, i would feel like crap too if i was in your shoes, it's got to be something besides the trans. 2-3 shift is tricky under power on any trans, i hit 5th sometimes and occasionly get a little grind if i don't het it just right but when i hit the sweet spot it goes right in.

How are you? How was your x-mas. I was with tony last saturday puting lights in his & my car.
My breaks are fine except it squeels when the car si moving slow.
by the way, I did get my tranny replaced at Performance Nissan both times.
I talk to Javier, the service rep and at this point he does not know what to do. Even NNA does not know what to do. I think Nissan engineers will be at Performance Nissan sometime in January so I am going to try to take to them.
It has never been a tranny problem it is a pin at the slave cyliner under the hood. They USED to replace trannys that were already grinding due to to being able to fully engage the clutch due to the pin. Now, they normally just replace the pin and send you on your way. NNA is really srutinizing the situation and not giving out trannys left and right anymore. That is why you are getting the rebuild. I doubt Performance can just snap their fingers and have a new trans in house either. It doesn't work that way anymore. NNA has identified the problem and the cars put out now come fixed and the ones that aren't are getting fixed. If you have a new trans AND a new pin and are still grinding I would really look at your driving style. If your dealer only replaces the trans without upgrading your pin then they are idiots and doing a disservice to you.
It's kind of strange this whole trans thing. In our store we wont rebuild them, just replace them. First it was replace the trans. Then they came out with the "pin" or "clevis" and it was replace trans and clevis. Next came the pedal assy and it was replace trans and pedal. Now it's back to trans only and make sure the clevis is the updated one. Everytime there seems to be a new generation trans involved. In the case of ssk0771 above, he has gone through all the fixes I've mentioned, each time installing the latest generation tranny. Luckily his is the exception as most seem to be fine now. Every so often you get that one car that just beats you to death as a dealer. ssk0771, make sure Javier hooks you up with Angel (our Nissan engineer) in Jan to see what can be done. Pure Tremble, still trying to find out what the inside difference between the latest generation trans and yours are.

Thanks everyone. Thanks Jeff.
I'm also noticing my tranny has gotten progessively louder since I've owned the car. (ie: downshifting you hear it whine more. Accelerating you can hear it whine more..). Definitely wasnt like that first week I had car.
