Unhappy Lost keys.

I just got a new to me 2006 350Z. 38,500 miles.

I paid $10,500 for it, it has a clean carfax.
One owner car.
California car. Im from Calif. so that was easy to find.

Here is my problem..... Im an idiot. I put the car in the garage and now not one but both sets of keys are missing. Lucky it is not my daily driver so its not an emergency.

The dealer will not cut me a new key because I am not the regestered owner... Duh.

I have not transfered it to my name because the tags are good until Dec. 2012. Ya I know...

The paperwork is in the glove box, AAA wont jimmy it because they are affreid to do damage or break the glass.

So I seem to be up the creek with out a paddle.

Soooooooooo How do I get into my own car. I have a hammer but that is a very last resort. I am sure there is a way to get in without buying a piece of glass.

Please help.

+1 on AAA. If a different operator won't help, escalate the call to a supervisor.

You bought a car, the tags were on the car when you bought it and are still good so rather then put it in your name you're leaving the car in the old owners name and using the old owners tags.

Can you get insurance for a car that

A. isnt in your name
B. has tags that are not in your name?

In Maryland insurance follows the tags, you cannot have tags without insurance or you get fined everyday you dont have insurance on the tags. You either have insurance on them or you turn the tags back into the DMV.

Does the old owner know you are not planning on putting the car in your name before the tags expire?

In CA, he can't get new tags without putting it in his name. He can however leave it in the previous owner's name without doing anything until the tags are due with a limited fear of being pulled over because the tags will appear good to a cop following him. That is illegal.

However, if the previous owner filed the "Release of Responsibility" with the DMV, this new criminal/cheater owner will be responsible for any legalities and the seller will be copacetic even though he sold the car to a crook.

OP. Like many have mentioned, you should 'first' get your priorities straight. Get the tags and everything in your name first. It's true you save a quick buck not doing it until December, but you now have caught youself in a situation where you should have just done it right to begin with. If that fails, keep calling around until you find someone that will open it. People need money, and will do it. If everyone's attitude is like RMichael, then take the hammer and just break your skull instead of the window. It's not worth living in a world with these people in it.

I bought the car.

Put it in the garage.

Havent transfered it "YET".

Its not on the road.

My insurance will cover me for 30 days so Im ok there.

I didnt mean to make a federal case over the issue. I F****D up, OK?

I hopped this was a friendly site like the Saturn one is. Seems I was wrong. My screw up was loosing the keys. Not the regestration.

Notice I said "I just bought the car" not I have had the car for months.

Im not on this site to show off, rather to help and be helped. If this is not what this site is about let me know and I will close the account.

Sorry if I offended anybody. I just tyinng to save a buck.......

No. Im affraid that as soon as I spend a butt load of money, there they will be.

Not an emergency.

Im just real pissed off at my self because I have a bad feeling I might have left them in the back (Trunk). I dont see them but that was the last time I remember seeing them.

I feel real stupid right about now.

Cover the driver window in tape except for one spot in the centre and smash the window, preferably with a broken spark plug. When the window is getting fixed, replace your window motor and consider it a savings that it got fixed without extra labor. It will require replacement within a year anyway (chronic problem).
Ensure that nothing gets stolen while the window is broken, otherwise you would have to make an insurance claim.

The real question is, how did you get a clean title 06 Z with 38,000 miles for $10,500????

I got real lucky with the purchase. I wasnt looking for it, It just happened and I would have been a fool to not buy it.

As for the keys, They were where I thought. In the back (Trunk). I contacted the guy I got it from and he found the Valet key. He didnt even remember it exsisted.

I went to AAA yesterday and it is now regertered it in my name. It was hard to do with the papers in the glove box and no keys.

All is open to interpertation as to why I didnt fix the title earlier. I was going to but setting the keys in the trunk turned out to be a bonehead move. My bad.

At least I have a faulse scince of security now.
