anyone have a 6 spd manual trans sitting in their garage? how much play is the input shaft supposed to have? if i grab it i can definately wiggle it, but i also measured it, looks to be about 1/16th of play.
I dont have any lying around to compare to your video, but I can tell you there has been noticeable play in the ones ive put in. How much I cannot remember exactly.
Did you just pull it off to service the clutch? Or does that trans have an issue?
That sound is crazy, and from the video of you shooting from the boot hole (is awesome!), but also doesnt really look like there is excessive play in the shaft or rotating assys (your eyes would be the best judge, the video quality may mask minor vibrations).
Im not sure how there can be that much noise and still have the transmission function, but it definitely seems like it is coming from inside the trans. And only in gear and seems to shift fine, although you are granny shifting hardcore lol.
Off chance stuff but have you verified there is no imbalance at the driveshaft?
Did you use an adapter plate to mount the trans (I think I saw one in the vids)?
thanks for the replies man. i am thinking the noise may have actually been from not lubricating the throwout bearing slider and maybe putting the clutch fork on wrong. it is just a used transmission and im hoping its fine. i am reassembling it all now and will give it another go, need to refab the shifter bracket to put it further forward first.
the reason i am going through all this trouble is that toyota transmissions are much crappier and more expensive, a 6 spd nissan trans costs less than a 5 spd toyota trans and a 6 spd toyota trans is 4k used, 6k new, ef that.
the 1jz is a wonderful motor though. ill post an update once i get it all back in the car in a few weeks.
hey kind of an old post well more than a decade but was it ok after you put it in the car? I have a cd-009 getting ready to go into a mk3 supra with a 1uz with about the same amount of play so figured to ask how it went.
I doubt that member is still active. But having done a clutch job on my Z twice over the years, I can say that a slight amount of play is fairly normal. What do I mean by slight? 1mm or less, I've never worked with a brand new transmission, and the FSM doesn't call out perpendicular play or tolerances at the tip of the input shaft. Instead they only mention "end play" tolerance which is your axial play (pushing in or pulling out in line with the shaft). I'm not sure if this is something you can accurately measure with the input shaft installed in the case. The measurement is done between the pressed bearing and snap ring (see screencap).
Anyway, the point is, you're going to get some perpendicular play with the transmission removed from the vehicle. The tip of the input shaft is captured by the pilot bushing/bearing which stabilizes it. Excessive deflection, which I would consider to be anything over 1mm at the tip, would indicate a worn bearing and it would be a good idea to replace it. That being said, if the input shaft seal isn't leaking, you could probably run with it and it should work fine, but may get some "cement truck" noises coming from the bell housing when idling in neutral (clutch pedal released). Some noise is considered normal, but when it really starts roaring, odds are the bearing is toast.
Hope you get something out of that, sorry it's not the most helpful comment.
Cheers!
