I still don't see why his insurance even needs to be involved - other than perhaps notifying them of this "accident"; where he is not at fault. It is a good thing to get them on your side (put them on advisement for if/when the sewer people decide to go all funky denial; then they can intervene on his behalf.
But if the story holds, they (the manhole people) are to blame and they do carry their own insurance against such things.

I dont see why my insurance needs to get involved. Id rather find a way to solve this on my own than have to deal with my insurance rates rising. If you would have read my original post you would have seen that this happened weeks ago and i dont have the ability to prove that it happened due to that. Please dont call me lazy for not reporting to my insurance. Everyone else on here has been helpful and found a way to come to solutions without criticizing my actions except for you.
If the damage was caused due to an unmarked road hazard and is reported as such, then you're not at fault. You're PAYING your insurance company to act as your agent in situations like this. They will go after the responsible party to recuperate losses. It will not be used against you to raise your premiums and if they even try, you go straight to your state's insurance commissioner and collect damages.
To pay premiums on insurance, get into an unavoidable accident, and then feel like you can't go to your insurance company to make you whole, then there's really no point in paying for comprehensive.
Unless you don't have comprehensive or unless you WERE at fault. In which case, you're stuck with the expense. Since you didn't really address in any specific sense what the circumstances of the one-car accident were, which is fine, then I guess we'll just assume you were at fault and don't want to bring your insurance into it.
From what I'm seeing in the photos you provided in your post though, that damage looks like it's going to be a bear to fix.
