Default A/C Compressor Clutch

Over the past month or so I've seen the clutch working at some times and others not, it just goes on and off when driving and sitting at idle. When turning the A/C on and off, it no longer engages at all now so no matter what temperature it is set to, hot air is blowing out of the vents. Because the air was still cold when the clutch was working, it makes me thing the compressor is completely fine. I haven't seen any posts about it on the A/C threads on this forum, but I've seen a couple individual compressor clutches for sale for considerably less than a whole new compressor. Does anybody have any experience installing just a new clutch on the compressor instead of a whole new assembly?
