transmission fluid
Mika,
Well, I drove around last night and I really like both the Royal Purple Engine oil and the MaxGear.
The shifting is still notchy, but you don't get that metal on metal sound and feel when shifting. More like the shifter is gliding over a notch. Smoother.
The guys that changed it said they found some metal splinters in the tranny oil drain area. Not sure what that means for the tranny, but hopefully the wear will be reduced with the RP.
So I really like the MaxGear and I think the difference is definately noticeable.
The engine oil totally rules. Deep growl from engine. Hell ya!

So there are some that like Royal Purple. Some that like
Redline. Sounds like both make the shifting a little smoother,
but neither really gets rid of the 1st-2nd gear grind when cold?
Does anyone else have any input?
Has anyone tried BG Syncroshift?

BTW, I found this on a Subaru forum:
Redline MTL -- Great for manual transmissions, hot or cold. A 70W80 GL-4 gear oil for use in manual transmissions on both street and track. Provides excellent protection of gears, synchronizers, and bushings. Shifts well when cold and allows for fast shifts when warm.
Redline 75W90 Gear Oil -- A GL-5+ and GL-6 spec oil, preferred for use in conventional and LSD differentials. Contains limited-slip friction modifiers for decreased noise and better wear from clutch-type LSD units. Suitable for street and track.
Redline 75W90NS Gear Oil -- A GL-5 oil, designed for conventional differentials, but can be used in clutch-type LSD units for increased locking rates, leading to reduced wheelspin. Not recommended for street-driven LSD units!
Redline MT-90 -- A 75W90 GL-4 gear oil recommended for use in manual transmissions on the track. Provides excellent protection of gears, synchronizers, and bushings at higher temperatures. Not recommended for street use in cold climates.
MT-90 is "not recommended for street use in cold climates"??

I used RP before and from my experience, it made my gear sticky.
just my .02 cent.
i had a really tough time putting my trans in 5th gear (it was like that from nissan when they put in my new trans) i swapped the fluid to the royal purple, and instanly, the trans glides into 5th now. so it made a very noticable improvement for me.

5th.
When I had my old Z (Coupe Touring) it was really hard for me to shift to 5th and when I adjusted the guide plate, it made my shift to 5th lot easier.
Just my thought.
I've had the RP in my tranny for a while now and I still like it. Of course, I can't remember what my car was like before it. I also put RP in the rear differential. I never noticed any stickiness in tranny, but I never tried Redline to compare it to. I also occasionally get a little trouble getting into 5th, but that could be my guide plate as I realigned it myself when installing my short shifter. I probably just need to adjust it.
Just some extra comments.

I mixed my own little concoction when the Z went in to get the tranny oil changed. I used 2qts MTL (70w80) & 2qts MT-90 (75w90). It's just enough for a perfect coefficient of friction to shift faster and it also takes away any notchiness in the gearbox. I love this combination and will do this in the next change.

RP Max Gear in both tranny and diff. made a huge difference. Shifting is so smooth now, used to be pretty notchy shifting from 1st to 2nd. Very quiet in all gear shifts. Glad I didn't wait, at 30K the OEM fluid didn't look to bad, but I am glad I am now totally synthetic thru out. Should pay dividends, as I plan to drive it only as a pleasure driver, no more daily drive stuff for the Z. BTW, just put in NGK Iridium Spark Plugs as well.
