Alignment/Feathering Q - do tires impact alignment?
Hey,
Took her in yesterday to get the TSB performed. I hadn't had a chance to get the snow tires off yet (Pirelli Snowsports mounted on the stock rims) so I brought the front summer tires in as well.
When I went to pick her up, the dealer told me that had two new fronts on order for me (free of charge), but that they hadn't done the alignment. Their plan is to get the new tires in, mount them, and then do the alignment/toe-in adjustment. They also said it would be "better" if I got the rear summers on for them to do the alignment.
There-in lies the rub - one of my summer rear's has a large crack in the sidewall on the inside, cause unknown. The local tire shop refused to mount it onto the rim, saying the tire is essentially pooched.
However, I don't really want to order two new stock rears right now because what I really want to do is get 4 new tires (Dunlop 9000, 245/40-18 front and 275/40-18 rear to go with my new SSR GT3 rims that should be hear tomorrow). What I do want to do is get my new tires from Nissan, store them in the basement for now, and mount them back on with some cheapo rears at the end of the lease. I figure the Dunlops will be dead in 2 years or so.
So, my question is this: is the alignment/toe-in affected in any way by the tires? Is there anything that would prevent the dealer from doing the feathering TSB with my Pirelli Snowsports on the back, which are the exact same size as stock? I'm just anticipating that they're going to give me some stupid runaround like: "No sir, we need all 4 summer tires on the car to do the alignment".
