Thumbs down Totalled...

Thankfully, it wasn't my DB 350Z Touring!

However, my daily driver - which I've owned since October 1995, that has been one of the best cars I've ever owned - is probably going to get totalled by the insurance companies.

Background:
My daily driver is a 1990 Probe GL which I bought in October of 1995 from my mother (so I could have a reliable car for college). My mother bought the car new from Ford January of 1990.

I put 240,xxx miles on the car - original engine, transmission, and most of the paint. That was until December 27, 2006, when the 2nd headgasket blew and I decided to replace the original engine with a remanufactured engine. After the new engine was installed, I had the car in my possession since March 1, 2007.

One week later and almost 400 miles on the new engine (not even broken in yet) and this accident happens.

story cut & pasted from another forum I frequent

Here's the story:

I was stopped at a stop light - 2 cars back - when I saw the VW Toureg (who was making a left onto the street I was on) get hit by the MB S500 (who ran through the stop light going the opposite direction I was going). The cars bounced off each other (air bags, etc...).

The VW came to a stop when it hit the car sitting in the turn lane (brand new Lexus IS350).

The Benz...bounced off the Toureg, came across the intersection, missed the first car in my lane (waiting for the light at the cross-walk line), bounced off the curb, SLAMMED into my passenger side door (caving it in), and finally stopping at the bumper of the 2006 Cadillac DTS behind me.

I'm fine. The PGL is driveable.

The damage:
All on the passenger side.
Door - scraped up and dented to hell (caved in but not into the cabin - just the outer skin).
Runner under the door - same as the door.
Rear quarter panel - a couple of scratches.
Rear bumper - Marked up and possibly scratched.
At the scene:
VW Toureg that got slammed into by the Mercedes benz S500:

Mercedes Benz S500 That ran through the red light, plowed into the VW, and careened into my PGL:

Goodbye S Class. Sorry to hear about the incident though. Since your car has severe cosmetic damage primarily on one side and is still functional, I'd say you got off pretty easy! Glad no one was severely hurt!

Probe doesn't look totalled to me? A new door, body work, and paint should fix that up... Who knows.. Insurance can be weird sometimes??

a 1990 probe w/ 80 bajillion miles with a rebuilt motor isn't worth much to the heartless, soulless insurance companies. The car probably wasn't worth the gas in the tank for them. Sorry for the loss. D:

Yeah it's totaled. My friend lost his 94 Integera DD/Beater (~170k miles) the same way. The damaged didn't look too bad but insurance totaled it because of what the car was actually worth. Sorry to hear man it's a bad situation because even though the car wasn't worth much on the market it was worth so much more to you.

Yeah, I figured my car would be totalled. Just a damned shame since I took very good care of the car for all those years...then just put in a new engine...

Oh well.

Also, I thought some of you might be interested in seeing/hearing about one hell of an accident and share a bit of a laugh (because it was amazing that no one was hurt)!

Yea, I would just buy it back from the insurance company as well. You will make a few bucks in the process, and be able to just go and buy a new door.

Actually, I think that is exactly what I'm going to do.

Buy it back from the insurance company, replace the door with one from the junkyard, maybe repaint it...

I've also had offers from people wanting to buy the car (wrecked) for cheap transportation! $$$

I bought the car from the insurance company and sold it to some guys in San Diego looking for a fixer-upper beater car for $300 and included all of my spare parts (except stereo equipment). I would have kept it for myself but after 6+ months of dealing with Mercury Insurance (the MB's insurer) I was worn out with dealing with it. And instead of making more money from parting it out, I sold it to guys who were genuinely intereted in working on it.

Dam Todd, you gave me a crazy scare.
With your title I thought it was the Z, and I was like no Mo F'in way.

But I'm glad you walked away without a scratch.
Also sorry to hear that your Ford got wrecked cause I know you loved the thing cause you were always talking about it.

Lol. Thanks Andrew. This was simply my fault for referencing my 3 year old thread in another thread in the Lounge...
