Chewwy's HR Progress thread

Hey, my name's Steve, I just bought a 2007 350Z Grand Touring a few weeks ago. I've had a few modded VW's, Audi's and a BMW in the past and was itching for something a little more fun. I work at a Nissan Dealership here in the Toronto area, and have wanted a 350Z for a while. Found this one locally and really liked it. I have quite a few plans for the car, and I will be driving it year-round.

Photoshoot from the weekend after I bought it, stock.

Found a used Stillen Intake for sale locally. They were a little dirty when I picked them up so I bought a K&N Recharge kit and cleaned em up.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....845556c204.jpg

Filter before and after one wash. I washed them twice, then oiled them.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....8559d75865.jpg

I was blown away by the difference in intake noise. Must-have mod for sure! I haven't taken installed pictures, I'll update with pics soon.

Last week I was driving home from work and the clutch pedal dropped. I brought the car in the shop this week and we found the pressure plate failed. Just my luck.

This morning I went to my local Z shop, Whitehead Performance, and placed my order:
-Jim Wolf Technology Clutch Kit with Lightweight Flywheel
-Zspeed HD Concentric Slave Cylinder
-Wilwood HD Master Cylinder
-Zspeed Insulated Stainless Clutch Line

It should all be here in a few weeks. Should give the car a nice little refresh.
I'll update again once the parts are here!

Small world...just ordered some parts from Whitehead today - Nice guys there.

Thank-you. Yeah, I was pretty happy with their Customer Service. What'd you end up buying from them?
I talked to them again today, parts should be on their way any day now.

I was bored at work today, decided to investigate the Block Heater.
The cord used to run along the drivers side fender and then down into the front bumper. It cluttered up the bay, and I know I'll NEVER use it. I had a diesel before and never used it, so I removed it. :dunno:

Canada Post can be slow as molasses if it feels like it!

Placed an order with Z1Motorsports for a Tomei Duracon Shift Knob and a Zino sticker. Came in last week. Put the sticker on this weekend. Will put the shift knob on Wednesday on my day off.

The Parts arrived for my car last week and it's all buttoned up, was out driving it this weekend, it felt great. I added Stop-Tech SS Brake Lines at the same time. Car feels Great! Can't wait for the break-in miles to be over so I can really push it!

Thank-you, it's a work in progress. Lots to come.

Installed my Tomei Shift Knob and Z1 finisher and threw on the Z1 Zino sticker last night.
Played around with it a bit before removing the factory plastic circle clip under the boot and then everything fit together nicely.

I like the feel of the Tomei shiftknob. It feels more direct going into gears and doesn't get hot in the sun or cold in the winter :bowrofl:

Picked up a little JDM engine bay bling the other day. ARC Cooling Panel. Someone posted it up for sale locally and I had to have it! It looks like a version 2 because it fits perfectly fine in my HR with no trimmming required.

Engine Bay is sloooowly getting cleaner. I'm going to get a degreaser and spend a little time a couple times a week getting everything cleaned up. Also looking for tips on what wires/harnesses I can re-route or delete to clean it up a little more. Thanks!

Yeah from Aurora it took us a little over an hour with the 407, on the way back with the 401 it was much longer.

My Z1 Master Cylinder Brace arrived last week, I installed it last night.
Honestly, I was surprised at the difference it made. I kinda thought it was a hoax, I figured I'd buy it and try it out because it was relatively cheap. After throwing it in, it's a huge plus in my brake pedal feel. I would definitely recommend it. Bit of a pain to install, but worth it.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....ae6c99ed67.jpg

Also ordered the Clear Corners for the front bumper. Should clean up the front end nicely.

Hoping to install these tonight, but if not maybe Friday.

I've had a few hatches in the past. I like the look of it deleted. Be sure to put a good coating of your favorite water repellent on the glass though. I use Kleen Freaks.

Put the Clear Bumper Reflectors in on Wednesday. I broke a few bolts in the process. Alot of the bolts/clips were seized together.

I'm happy with the installed look, it's subtle. They make my headlights look yellow now though :icon22:

Time Flies! I put 6,000KM on my car already, so I did an oil change this past weekend. I used Motul 5W-40 Sport Ester last time and decided to continue using it. This time I tried out the Nismo Oil Filter and purchased a Dimple Stainless Steel Magnetic Drain Plug. The magnet is VERY STRONG! I was advised not to put it near my cell phone or any credit cards.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....74ded21674.jpg

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....83e35cd234.jpg

And my Wiper Delete finally arrived from Alloy + Carbon in Greece (I wasn't aware it was coming that far)
Quality piece, it comes paint-matched and matched perfectly.

** I know I still need to delete the washer. I'm working on it **

That's all the updates for now. I need to install my Nismo gas pedal yet. I bought some gun metal Plasti-Dip and the Metalizer. I'm going to paint the wheels, see how they turn out. Just a temp fix. If I don't like it, I'll just tear it off, and maybe send em away for powdercoating over the winter.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....72d8701fe8.jpg

iideadeyeii 07-10-2017 10:15 AM

Make sure to spray the plasti-dip real T-H-I-C-K. Everyone I've known who used plasti-dip had a very very hard time peeling it off.

As for water repellent I just fill a spray bottle with rain-x and use that on the car, but I don't drive the Z in the rain anyways.

Noted! I'll go buy a few more cans then just in case. I can always return the extra's. Thanks!

That's a good idea. I've been happy with the results from Kleen Freaks. I use this one:

So I plasti-dipped my wheels yesterday. I threw my winters on while I was painting them. They came out ok. Not sure I'm in love with them, but they look better than the curb-rashed and paint fading/peeling that was going on before.

Haven't posted here in a bit, just a small update.

Installed my Nismo 380RS pedal, still getting used to it for heel/toe shifts.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....13fbce2287.jpg

Bought the Nismo GT Titanium Shift knob from RHDJapan and installed it last night. I absolutely love it :bowrofl:
It's slightly weighted and just pops into gears so much better than my Tomei one.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....b1954dfcb9.jpg

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....fc5e803f9b.jpg

I was also super impressed with RHDJapan. I ordered the shift knob Saturday and it arrived in Toronto Thursday night. It was well packaged and they provided multiple updates while it was being shipped until it arrived. Top notch work, and I will be ordering from them in the future. Faster/Cheaper than ordering out of the States!

I ordered a Z-speed Aluminum Shroud for under the engine bay from Whitehead Performance, that should be in next week and I'll install that while I do my oil change.

Cheers, Happy Labour Day Weekend from Toronto! :chug:

chewwyy 10-12-2017 10:21 AM

Happy Belated Canadian Thanksgiving! I did some maintenance I've been slacking on over the long weekend.

-New Spark Plugs
-Cleaned TB's

Got a CEL next morning, had one of the tech's reset my idle and it was all good again.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....ce5d8ff70e.jpg

Next UP:
-Reseal/Polish Headlights
-Mount Winter's :icon9:

chewwyy 10-18-2017 06:27 AM

Been busy at work, haven't had much down time to get at my headlights yet. Found a spare driver's side headlight for sale somewhat locally I'm trying to work out a deal on.

Brought the wheels I bought earlier this summer in to have the tires stripped for New Winter Tires.
Sprayed them with a few coats of wheel acid and hit them with the pressure washer and they cleaned right up!

I'm planning on ordering 4 225/45/18 Michelin X-Ice at the beginning of November for a Square Winter setup, easier to rotate etc..

I removed the centre caps, they are set aside

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....b65fa936e4.jpg

I didn't know or didn't remember that they had TPMS sensors. Hopefully they all work!

To Do List:
* Re-Seal Headlights
* TSB for Clicking Axles

chewwyy 10-31-2017 11:29 AM

Another update, not sure if anyone's reading these or not but :dunno:

My driver's headlight was leaking. The sealant had dried up and was allowing water into the headlight. This weekend I took it apart and re-sealed it with OEM Nissan sealant. Was a bit of a bi***, but glad it's done.

Now they just need a Polish!

Thanks to Mike ^ Carbuffguy, I was able to snag a decent deal on a set of Blizzaks with good tread life left. Hoping to get them mounted, and put on at some point today/tomorrow.

Also, found a puddle in my trunk while cleaning it out last week. I had someone spray the trunk while I looked from the inside and it appears the Trunk Air Vents are leaking at the seals. I'm going to try and take the bumper off this weekend and re-seal the vents. In the meantime I've been driving with my trunk stripped in order to keep an eye on the water :icon43:

Well, we had discussed them being 225's, but they were 255's :rofl2:
No issues though, they fit fine. They are a couple years old, so a little hard, but they are fine. We'll see how they do when we get some real snow!

chewwyy 11-16-2017 08:17 AM

Finally took my day off for the first time in a few weeks yesterday. Spent some quality time in the garage with the Z.

Did an Oil Change with Fresh Motul Sport Ester 5W-40. The Z-speed cover made it so much easier with the quick access panel. Two bolts and I could access the drain plug and oil filter. :bowrofl:

My other issue was a leak in the trunk. I had a friend spray the trunk and noticed the leak coming from the rear trunk air vents. So yesterday I pulled the bumper off, removed the trunk air vents and found the source of the leak. The gaskets on the air vents were completely destroyed. I used some of the leftover Nissan OEM sealant from my headlights to fill the spots missing in the gasket. Once installed I sealed them with some Clear Waterproof Marine sealant.

Woke up to a snow silhouette of my 350Z on Sunday morning was kinda cool.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....e92cdf6f12.jpg

After I cleaned the snow off I met up with a friend at Sunset Grille for some breakfast before we opened up his dealership's shop to do some work on our cars.

He was doing some work on his dash/stereo before putting his Dynosty tuned G35TT away for the winter.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....d960adf90f.jpg

He had applied sound-deadening to his trunk over the winter and had some left-over, so I bought it off him and used the rest on my trunk before putting the interior plastics back in.

Seemed to make a bit of a difference, especially on the highway, and roads with alot of debris.
Until next time

Was able to use a shop today so I started off by putting it up on the hoist and swapping the headlight bulbs out for a set of 6000K's, the setup from the previous owner was 2 slightly different colours and was driving me nuts, my shop foreman had a set laying in his box and sold em to me cheap. Looks better.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....9211891609.jpg

I took advantage of the hoist and used the opportunity to do the Nissan TSB for the clicking axles.

Started off by removing cotter pin and outer 32mm nut. I made a mark with a sharpie on the axle spline and the hub for reference later. Then removed the 14mm bolts securing the inner cv.

**TIP** Most of the DIY's suggested removing the axle at this point suggesting it is a tight fit but with patience it can com out. I tried, but was concerned about tearing a cv boot or other damage.
On the driver's side I removed the upper bolt for the sway bar endlink, and on the passenger side I removed the lower bolt and rotated the swaybar & endlinks out of the way. This made a HUGE difference, and gave so much more clearance getting them in and out.

Be sure to thoroughly clean out the hub and surrounding area before re-assembling. (this is a before picture)
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....99fc456f96.jpg

I put the axles in the vice and used an air wheel to clean off the rust/debris and applied the Nissan recommended Molyslip grease. I also added a little Loctite blue to the the axle splines. This was a recommendation from a friend and VW technician not part of the Nissan TSB.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....6e571e8e23.jpg

Re-installed the axles and rotated them 180 degrees as per the TSB directions, secured it with a New OEM Nissan 32mm nut and New OEM cotter pin to Nissan Torque Specs as per TSB. Finished by greasing up the hubs with more Molyslip and re-assembled.

I finished it up this afternoon and drove around a little bit without hearing any axle clicking. Will keep updated

chewwyy 12-14-2017 11:23 AM

Well, my car has not made any clicking noises since the TSB, happy to say it worked perfectly!

It snowed here a bit recently, went out and did some snow drifts :bowrofl:

Unfortunately, I started up my car at work the other day and found that the flex on the Y-pipe decided to give out, I was hoping it would last until the spring.

Trying to decide if I;
a) Patch it
b) Buy a Motordyne XYZ
c) Buy a cheap aftermarket/oem replacement
d) Replace whole damn exhaust lol...

Will keep you updated...

This is a solid thread. Nothing crazy, but a lot of the small improvements that really improve the car. I like it.

Thanks alot, appreciate it! Quality over quantity is how I look at it. No need to rush it, I have no plans to sell the car.

I went with the latter ha ha... Found a super low mileage Motordyne Shockwave TDX2 Catback for sale locally. I should get it on Monday. Pics to come! :fyeah:

chewwyy 12-19-2017 05:34 AM

:icon21: Got my Motordyne exhaust last night. Cleaned it up a little bit, could use a little bit of a polish, but no complaints. Previous owner's car was pretty low, so there were a few scrape marks on the y-pipe and the muffler. Shouldn't cause any issues, and he gave me a little extra off the price because of it.

Did some running around today to get the last few things I needed for the exhaust install tomorrow.

Previous owner lost a nut and chopped the V-Band off, not sure why...

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....4bdb82e11c.jpg

Called Performance Improvements first thing in the morning, they had a Vibrant V-Band in stock and they set it aside for me.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....d10d4a7fd3.jpg

I had a hard time finding a replacement nut for the V-Band clamp. I went to Brafasco, AC Delco, Home Depot, Lowes, and Canadian Tire before calling Bolts Plus, they had 6 in stock I bought all 6 just in case.

** FYI: The V-Bands Use M8x1 Nuts**
will be using two to lock them together, like Vibrant's Clamp

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....a49ad1e93d.jpg

Fun part is tomorrow, pulling off the old exhaust and installing the Motordyne. I have a friend popping by early, going to try and have it done by mid-afternoon.

chewwyy 12-20-2017 05:18 PM

DONE!

Pulled the stock exhaust out. Had to cut the studs off the stock cats and replace with new bolts. Install was a breeze. V-bands are life. Made the job super easy.
Will post pics in a few days, finished late and it's dark now. Took it for a drive, and it sounds great, no drone, clean tone. Super happy. :bowrofl:

Not much new for the Z, just been driving it, and trying to keep the salt off it as best as possible. I did notice a rattle from the back of the car. I looked online and it mentined to check and see if the EVAP Shield was hitting. I checked and it was pretty well touching my rear passenger exhaust pipe.

Bye Bye

Ha Ha... Thanks! I'm really hoping to get a second car or a Demo from work before next winter. My gas lid freezes shut and I need to thaw it out at the gas station etc.. It's a nightmare. :suicide:

Big Day today. Hit 159,999 kilometres on my car. I've put on 25,000km since April 2017 already! :dunno:

ha ha.. My Plan is to buy a 2nd car in the fall, then park the Z for next winter :bowrofl:

So, the other day I woke up to find my Windows wide open and frost on my Window Ledge. By that evening it progressed to the point where everytime I'd open my door, the windows would just roll down. I was nervous about leaving it anywhere at night, so on the weekend, after making a new puck to save my pinch welds and doing my oil change I decided to investigate.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....0758f68052.jpg

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....1f2c844029.jpg

So, I took off the inner door skin, then the door panel on the passenger side before realizing that wasn't necessary. I re-assembled everything but the inner door skin then realizing that the Passenger window was no longer working. I played with everything and couldn't figure it out, so I finished the Nissan TSB for the Window Motor Reset to see what would happen, knowing that the Passenger couldn't go down, was better than it going down on it's own. At first it seemed to work, so I left it in the garage overnight.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....8e699ca9c7.jpg

Sunday morning when I woke up, driver's window was open again. I took the car out in the morning for a bit, and since it was a beautiful day out, I decided to try and tackle the Passenger window issue and do the Reset again.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....b05e8b84b7.jpg

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/my350z....faf246581e.jpg

Put everything back together, Passenger window was working again, so I did the Nissan TSB Reset on both and all seemed fine again. I left it outside all day, then before I went to bed I checked.... AAND it was down again.

Today I reached out to a friend and Nissan tech and explained everything to him, he told me he was pretty confident it was my Driver's Side Window Switch and not the window motors. Awesome, went to price one out... $600 at the dealership....

So, Anyone have an 06-08 Driver's Side Window Switch laying around?

chewwyy 02-06-2018 07:19 AM

So, when removing my door panel I was following directions for an 03-05, not realizing that the 07 door panels came apart a little different. I ended up snapping these two tabs for the screws that go in from the backside. I spent a little time glueing them together the other day and fully re-assembled them last night, no issues. They held strong, and went together perfectly. :bowrofl:

I also managed to source down a Driver's window switch. It is coming from Florida and should be at my US Postal Box by Wednesday/Thursday. I was able to save about $500. Found someone doing a part-out of VQ Nation. :fyeah:
