Default WTB: a beater second car

So I'm in the market for a beater and I haven't had much luck so far. I've looked at the listings and either the cars are sold by the time I've called or they are in such terrible shape that they're not worth the effort.

So my question is do you all know of a word of mouth or other lesser known resource where I can buy a semi-dependable beater second car? My limit is $1000 and I have cash in hand to write a check.

+1 on trying to find a beater around the same price. and dealing with the same problem.

have you tried craigslist? or autotrader? or your local newspaper?

I've tried autotrader and cars.com. I won't go to craigslist, I don't trust them and I've heard that if you post a sale or wanted ad, you are bombarded with all kinds of junk mail and scammers.

If you could narrow down the "everywhere," I'd love to make someone $1000 richer.

craigslist has a bunch, and you only get bombarded if you post, not reply.

If you get a Jeep, make sure you get the V6 model, they last forever.

Come up to southern PA, there are used car lots on almost every corner around my area. This is where leased cars come to find a new home .

He means the 4L I6, keep oil in them and they literally do last forever.

I've actually been to an auto auction in Mannheim but I don't recall seeing any beaters there. Maybe I was in the wrong place.

Just tell me which city to go to and I could make a day trip out of it. Thanks.
