What for Solo II: Z, Z4, S2k, or ???

not to skew the topic or anything, but I just test drove a a new BMW Z4 3.0 6 speed with Sport suspension option and was shocked at how well this thing handled and accelerated. I am strongly considering a 350Z Track for stock autox use and the $8k price difference puts a Z4 out of my reach (S2000 torqueless buzzbomb is not my cup of tea), but my conclusion is that in the right hands the Z4 is going to be as much or more competition as an S2000. IMO the 350Z has the engine torque advantage, but the Z4 may have the handling advantage since it is on the same width 18" wheels with less weight to carry. Could be really interesting this year.

Hopefully, the 3.0 handled better than the 2.5 I drove...that thing had more body roll than a fat lady on roller blades.
BTW, are there any necessary autox parts available for the Z4 yet?? Lighter exhaust, adj front swaybar, Koni DAs??
The only drawbacks I see to the 350z are the tire selection and gearing. For the 18" wheels, Hoosier is the only decent tire available...but that is only a problem for regional folks on a budget. As for the gearing, 2nd runs out of steam just shy of 60mph and due to the terrible torque curve past 5000rpm, it is probably going to be best to short shift around 6200 (IMHO) for best acceleration...and that occurs around 50-55mph. It seems strange to say, but the 350z may have more of an advantage on short courses without longer straights. It might end up being a great Pro-Solo car...but then the WRX STi will also end up in BS I'd bet and it will be hard to match an AWD launch.
Negcamberz,
if you use Hoosier your max 2nd gear speed will be even lower, but you will increase overall gearing too:
245/45-18 OE tire: 26.7" diameter, 61 mph, 3.56 gear
245/40-18 Hoosier: 25.3" diameter, 58 mph, 3.76 eff. gear
245/35-18 Hoosier: 24.5" diameter, 56 mph, 3.88 eff. gear
eff. gear means the rear diff gear you would have to run on the OE diameter tire to get the same gearing effect. That will help acceleration "if" the tires hook up. It might help to power throttle away the understeer too, hard to say until it somebody tries it.

Better acceleration would definitely be an advantage. But the disadvantage I see is that the 350Z owner would have to waiste time shifting to 3rd (and probably then downshift back to 2nd at the end of a short straight) when the S2k and possibly the Z4 could stay in 2nd and still be in their peak powerband.
That "Joe" thing just ain't fooling anyone.
Besides, denying you know mAs but knowing the evolution list is just not possible.
BTW, I still think the 240hp M Coupe could be a real winner in BS in the hands of someone that really knows how to set one up from having experience with a Z3 Coupe. I can think of one person that might be able to do that, but I think he's been driving a Z06 and it has made him soft from all the hp and torque.

Negcamberz,
WTF is mas?????????
I am new to Evolution forum just as I am new here. Is this some kind of joke or something? Thank you for making a newbie welcome ... not. Why are you dissing me???
I can only dream of driving, let alone owning a Z06, they look like fun, same for a Z4. The M Coupe is fugly and supposedly drives just as bad, nobody can win in that breadwagon. What a joke. A 350Z would probably eat it's lunch.
What model 350Z do you drive. I want to get a Track myself.

yes, it's Joe dammit

350zzzrule,
He's referring to me, Mark Sipe (mAs, MaS, MS), and no that's not me. If it was I'd be over at his house trying to find out why he's being such a smart-ss.
I only just figured out to get on this frickin board, kept clicking the wrong option choice for cookies in the registration form.
