Default Engine failure at the track - options to replace

So I killed my engine at the track yesterday. You can see the misery here:

http://www.vimeo.com/12131122

I believe it was oil starvation and we're pretty sure the damage is extensive although the teardown hasn't yet begun.

I'm thinking about two options for replacement:

1) Crate motor from a place like this:
http://www.importpartspro.com/niin1.html

2) Salvage:
http://www.car-part.com

The engine is a 2006 rev up and the car is not a daily driver. I had not planned on a built motor yet but I guess that's now an option. I don't plan on going forced induction in the future and I liked to get back to the track as soon as possible.

Any ideas on other places to source a motor? Pro/cons of each option?

Thanks

I doubt it would be under warranty still with it being an 06....if so, it's probably on the edge.

Check around the vendor forum for oil burners if you want to save some duckets. That's what I did and I couldn't be happier. Cheap, easy, and I change the oil every event or two anyway, so burning a little bit is no biggie for me.

Great video, bummer about losing the engine. Those prices for the crate motor long blocks are almost as bad as NiSSan prices.

What track is this? Looks awesome. Good luck man, my trans blew at Road America in April. I understand your pain.

Started tearing down the engine yesterday. One dead connecting rod so far.

Wow that blows dude.. I have an 06' with a bit of oc.... So was your oil level checked before you ran it? I am going to Shannonville in July and I would really not like this to happen to me. What were your mods?

I wouldn't have guessed oil starvation from that video unless your oil level was low - you aren't in a high-G area at all, and were driving mildly.

My guess is that the mixture has leaned out due to poor fuel pickup on the long corners & that you have detonated a piston.
Unless your oil was very very low, the G forces dont apear to be high enough to cause oil starvation.

I don't see why you can't try to get Nissan to warranty the motor. It should be under warranty still. 5yr/60k on powertrain. Just omit the part about being on the track when it went

I'm going to chalk this up to pilot error. I didn't actually check the oil before that run. 20 minutes total running that day. I'd changed the oil before the previous event and even thought it was overfilled. Did about 2 hours running, checked the oil, seemed OK at the end of that day. Got side tracked with a bunch of safety upgrades during the week and didn't check the oil again before this event. Although I thought about it I assumed it would be OK, apparently not.

Lesson learned. I have no excuse but I'm amazed that the 06 can burn that much oil in such a short time (even if its a known problem). Appears it doesn't like Mobil 1 either and that dipstick definitely gives dubious readings.

I'll be keeping an eagle eye on the next engine, a salvage motor. Also need to get my cooler sorted out and install a spacer.

Ya dont blame yourself man. It is possible, especially with track use to go through that much. Were you pushing the car on the track? High rev's? The engine probably had previous damage to it also. I assume it is a used z? Probably ran dry before.
I'm using Mbl1 0w40 and it consumes half of what it was. Or so it seems....
But ya you gotta check it real often with the 06'!

Try these guys, http://www.roadmasterimportengines.com (NOTE: you have to call them)

Nissan link

When I blew mine up I found them too late. They rebuild, or build to your spec and their price for a long block was pretty good. What sucked is they don't post the VQ35DE on the website but they had some in stock when I checked, but like I said I had already begun my build up. However a REV UP may be harder to find.

Update time. It's been busy getting this thing up an running again.

So I pulled the engine and found some shrapnel. Crank, case, heads and cams are toast.

Found an scrap longblock from a forum member:

https://my350z.com/forum/engine/4883...o-reserve.html

The install went well. Had some smoking problems for a bit. Compression test was 180-190 across the cylinders. Tried a leakdown and found what appeared to be leakage past a ring, weird given the compression looked good. Dropped some oil in the cylinder, things improved. Ran some cleaner through the engine. Changed the oil to Castrol GTX 10W40. Problem solved.

Took it out to a Solosprint competition and things seemed good:

http://www.vimeo.com/13079180

Plan to stick with the cheap *** Castrol as it seems to consume way less oil and only costs $17 for 5 litres at the local Walmart.
