Year-round Z in Chicago?
Hello-
I've been reading on this forum for a while (along with some for other cars.) I'm getting a new car soon and have been crazy about the Z since it came out and I was still broke. My only concern is this - I live in Chicago, and can only afford 1 car. It will have to be my daily driver, all 12 months of the year. My commute involves a little street driving and 10 miles of interstate. I've only had front drive cars in the past. Does anyone out there drive their's year round like I would have to? In the snow? How's it handle? I've been looking at some of the 4WD options (you know the ones) but the Z just looks a billion times hotter, and that's just to start!

I haven't driven the Z in winter yet, but I have driven two different late model Trans Ams over the course of 8 winters with no problems. So plenty of RWD snow driving for me. Here's my advice:
1. Avoid roads on steep hills, especially ones that don't get salted/plowed often.
2. Keep the VDC on. Good God, keep it on.
3. Don't drive slower than traffic around you, but don't drive faster than feels comfortable for you and the Z.
4. If you feel the back tires losing traction, lay off the gas, don't hit the brakes, and keep the front wheels pointed in the direction you want to go.
5. Stay a good distance back from the car in front of you. This is more general advice rather than specific RWD snow driving.
6. Don't keep the engine revved too high while doing donuts in that unplowed empty parking lot. You know the one I'm talking about.

im in chicago, i bought the Z in feb. I only drove it once on snow, and it was a disaster. i owned a cavalier before this Z, and man, did i miss it! lol Although many have told me some weights in the hatch and some good snow tires, youre good to go. But ill be storing mine in the garage and buying something cheap and fwd for the winter.
